“As often as I dare. There’s something beautiful about the place where the land meets the water.”

“I never thought of it like that before. It’s usually the water I look at.” When you have gorgeous views in the distance, it’s easy to forget what’s right under your nose.

My brother looks at her like she’s a spectacular creature. “That’s how I feel about sunsets. The place the sun disappears behind the sea is magical.” He takes a bite of his chicken, and Maris copies him.

“Is it good?” I ask.

“Different. It’s tasty.” She looks at the food before eating another piece.

“Try the sauce. I made it myself,” Owen says, adding some homemade tomato ketchup to Maris’s plate.

She dips the chicken in and makes a yummy noise as she eats it. “Wow. You’re a talented botanist.”

“Unfortunately, I can’t take credit for growing the tomatoes. Back home, I used to have a garden, but not here.” He smiles sadly.

“Where’s home?” Maris asks.

“England.”

She seems to be trying to place the location in her mind, so I add, “The North Sea.”

“Aw. It’s a little cold for me there.”

“Us too,” I say.

“Are you a fan of the ocean?” Owen asks.

“Very much so,” Maris says once she’s finished the food in her mouth.

“Maris is more than a fan. She’s an expert.”

“A marine biologist is a great job,” he says, jumping to conclusions.

“Yes. It’s pretty great to be involved in something you love.”

We finish the food and Owen falls asleep in the chair. “What do you say to us sharing the bed?” I ask.

She hesitates, but then agrees. “Yes. That sounds like a plan.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll be a perfect gentleman.”

I give her a spare toothbrush and an oversized t-shirt. She settles into my bed, and I climb in next to her. There’s only one bed in our small apartment in Haiti. Luckily, Owen often stays in the chair.

“Good night, Kasper.” She snuggles into the pillow, and I turn out the light.

“Good night, princess. May your dreams be sweet.”
