“Yes. Besides, if someone is dumb enough to steal from you, I’ll track the fucker down and get it back before killing him.”

Her tongue darts out to wet her lips while her eyes search mine, then she asks, “Have you killed a lot?”

Lifting my hand, I brush a couple of strands behind her ear. “Do you really want to know?”

“The mafia is this whole other side of you that I don’t know.”

“As I’ve said before, I mostly take care of the hacking and tracking part of things. I’m also backup for the family, so if we have a meeting with another group, I’ll be on a roof with my sniper rifle to take out any threats.”

“Have you ever killed a regular person? You know, someone who isn’t a criminal.”

I shake my head.

She seems to relax a little, and it has me asking, “Feeling better?”

“Yeah.” Leaning her head against my shoulder, she lets out a heavy breath. “It’s just a lot to take in all at once.”

“I know. I’m trying to take it slow, but after I almost lost you, it’s difficult. I just want to love you in every way possible.”

She turns on my lap until she’s straddling me and meets my eyes. “I’m not going to lie, you’re a hell of a lot more intense since the shit went down, but I get why.” Leaning closer she presses a soft kiss to my mouth before giving me a beautiful smile. “Thank you, Dario.”

“You’re welcome, Tesoro.”

Chapter 33

Eden

“So you basically fired me,” I say, lifting my eyebrow at Dario, where he’s standing in the doorway of his office.

“No. I got a replacement to work as a janitor at the ballet company because you need time to heal after the shit you went through.”

“I’ve been off for a week. The bruises have faded a lot,” I argue. “Besides, I work the night shift where no one actually sees me. I can go back to work.”

He walks closer to me, and taking a deep breath, he says, “I’m not referring to the bruises, Tesoro. You need to process everything that happened to you.”

“I’m much better.” Taking hold of his hand, I grip it between both of mine. “Shit happened, and I’m moving on. You should, too.”

His eyes narrow on my face. “We’re not talking about me.” His expression grows softer. “You killed a man and watched another woman die. You got drugged and beaten. You don’t have to be strong around me. I know it will take time.”

God, I love this man.

A smile forms around my lips. “Growing up in Brownsville, I’ve seen a lot of shit. You learn to accept what happened and go on with your life.” Not wanting him to think I’m heartless, I add, “A part of me will always feel sad for Milania, but the rest of the stuff that happened is old news.”

He stares at me for a moment, his eyes searching mine. “Okay.” He lets out a sigh, then spits out the truth, “I don’t want you to work as a janitor.”

Letting go of his hand, I cross my arms over my chest. I tilt my head, raising my right eyebrow. “So you are firing me.”

“No. Can’t you think of it as a promotion?”

“A promotion to what?”

“My personal assistant whose only job is to give me love twenty-four-seven.”

I let out a burst of laughter because, even though he’s so freaking sweet, he drives me crazy.

“I can’t be a stay-at-home wife. I need to keep busy.”

He wraps his arms around me. “I like the sound of stay-at-home wife.”
