I didn’t know how, but as soon as I had been going down on Zazie after our last escape, I had forgotten the terror of the situation. I didn’t think it was possible at the time, but that feeling had disappeared.

It was back now.

My body went rigid as everything clicked into place. In an instant, I was on my feet and pulling a naked Zazie out of the bed. Her ass was still a pretty bright pink, but she’d more than earned that. I paid it no mind as I quickly shoved a shirt over her head.

“I don’t want to get up yet,” the sleepy little thing whined, and I shook my head.

“It’s time to go,” I demanded, but she didn’t move. She just groaned, not fully conscious yet. Her body didn’t heal as fast as mine—probably because she wasn’t at the age where her immortality set in, so her body looked like it was still recovering. Her eyes looked bruised from the dust and her voice sounded raspy still. So I helped dress her. Getting a pair of pants on her was a little more difficult than I’d anticipated, but eventually I managed. “Seraphus is on his way, and we need to get the fuck out of here.”

Her eyes were still mostly shut, but the sound of her father’s name seemed to shake her awake somewhat.

Still glancing around through heavy eyelids swollen from the dust and dirt of the day before, she huffed, her body tilting over with exhaustion. “Shit. That’s not good news,” she muttered, and I lifted her up in my arms and carried her out of the room. She curled into my chest and wrapped her arms around my neck, and for a few long moments, I reveled in how perfect my mate fit against me, like she was made for me.

“Let’s go,” I said, and we ran down the hallway, through the house, and straight into the waiting car.

“Got the jewels? The diamond?” I asked Murtagh as he pulled his coat over his shoulders.

“I have all the gems. Don’t worry,” he replied back, slipping inside the car with a grimace at the nearby road, as if he wondered how much time we actually had to get out of dodge—hours? Minutes? Seconds? We couldn’t risk it.

I looked down the hill the villa was perched upon and saw several black cars making their way up the private road we lived on.

That wasn’t good…

The car was already packed, Miles already inside in the driver’s seat while on his cellphone. That man moved almost unnaturally fast when he wanted to.

I slipped inside with Zazie in my arms and as soon as my ass hit the seat, the car took off towards the airport, going the longer, bumpier way down the mountain to avoid the line of cars coming up to meet us.

Miles was already on the phone, arranging for my private jet to be waiting for us and primed for take-off.

“What the fuck is going on?” Zazie asked, her sleepiness still apparent in her voice.

“Your father is a madman,” Murtagh gritted, obviously not any happier about leaving suddenly than we were. “He attacked Wendy and her demons, and now he’s on his way here to find you. We’re leaving. Now.” He grabbed a bag of chips that was hidden in the glove box and started to open them, crunching almost with purpose.

She rubbed her hands over her face. “Did he kill them?” she asked, looking about as aghast as her exhaustion could manage.

Murtagh shrugged. “They don’t sound happy, but they’re alive. Mostly because Wendy told him most of what he wanted. Like our location.”

“Well, how sweet,” she sighed, and then looked back at the villa. “So, no breakfast then?”

I chuckled. “No breakfast. But maybe if you ask nicely, you’ll get another spanking instead.”

She pouted and looked away. I’d heard Murtagh punishing her. She’d gotten it good. A part of me thought maybe she didn’t need another round, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to bend her over my lap and turn her pretty little ass red anyway. Her skin was still marked and scratched and bruised from her hand-grabby response during our adventure into the crypt last night, and it certainly didn’t have to be that way. There had been no booby-traps under the diamond. We would have been able to just walk safely back home.

“I think I’ve been punished enough for one day,” she mumbled, and I smirked.

The car zipped through the streets, and by the time we reached the airport, my jet was already on the tarmac. A man ushered us through straight to the plane, and in a rush, the four of us climbed the stairs and took our seats. In minutes, the plane’s engines were starting up, and we were hurtling down the runway, and then we were up in the air.

As soon as the jet stabilized, Murtagh flew out of his seat and started rifling through a huge stack of papers. He shifted through them until he found what he was looking for with a shout. “I’ve got it!” he exclaimed and held up a map of the world.

“Got what?” Zazie asked.

Murtagh straightened a large paper, almost the size of himself. “A world map. I want you to look at it and tell me where we’re going next. You have the gift—how far away can you use it? Because I have no research left to have us find the second. You said it helps to see it, and you have its likeness right here.” He pulled the diamond, with some faltering difficulty because of its size, from his pocket.

Zazie sighed, looking still hungover and fingering a scratch on her temple with her index finger with annoyance. “Do I have to do it now?”

“You have to try,” Murtagh said, raising his eyebrow expectantly, “Unless you want another spanking just like the last one.”

I could see the wheels turning in her head. She really wanted to say something snarky, but the last spanking was probably fresh in her mind, and she wasn’t eager for a repeat performance.
