“It’s okay, Yazmine,” Kairo gently assures me, smoothing a palm on my back.

The tears flow over when I’m done emptying out my guts, throwing up everything until my tummy feels empty. Sobbing uncontrollably, the flurry of emotions that wash over me is unbearable.

I just want to curl up under a blanket and never come out.

“It’s okay, Yaz…” Kairo whispers as she joins me on the floor and wraps her arms around me.

I’m thankful for the shoulder to cry on even though I feel like I’ve humiliated myself.

“I—I don’t know what’s—” I stop dead in my tracks when the realization hits me. Even the ears stop flowing, compelling me to lift my face and stare blankly at Kairo.

“Yaz, what’s wrong?”

I hear her question through the thumping in my ears, shaking my head slowly. “I need you to take me to the doctor.”

Kairo nods and quickly gets to her feet, helping me to mine. My knees feel like Jell-O, threatening to cave under my weight.

Only by some miracle, we make it down the elevator and into the hospital. Thanks to Kairo holding onto me, allowing me to prop myself up by bracing her shoulder.

“Yazmine…” Doctor Amell comes into the room shortly after Kairo sends her a mind link to come over urgently. “What’s the matter?” she asks with a worried expression.

Kairo goes on to explain how she found me in the bathroom, spilling my guts out in the toilet. When the doctor turns wary eyes on me, I shrug.

“I think I might be pregnant.”

“What?” Kairo exclaims with a gasp.

“Yeah…” I smile when I notice the excitement in her eyes. “I missed my period, so I’m guessing today’s fiasco was morning sickness.”

“Well, let’s get you tested, then,” Doctor Amell says as she heads to the desk. She brings back a plastic cup and holds it out for me. “Just pee in the cup, and I’ll get it tested.”

“Wait…” I smile bemusedly. “So the pregnancy test is just an ordinary test. Nothing fancy ‘cause of the dragons?”

Doctor Amell chuckles, “No, it’s just an ordinary test. We had them brought in for the sake of the human mating process.”

I nod as I take the cup to the bathroom to gather a sample for testing. ‘The human mating process,’ huh?

It sure doesn’t feel like that’s all this is…

When I’m done in the bathroom, I return the sample to the room. The doctor sticks a test strip into the cup and waits. Kairo holds my hand as we wait with bated breath until Doctor Amell finally looks up from the cup.

“Positive. You’re pregnant, Yazmine.”

Kairo jumps up excitedly, pulling me into a bouncing embrace and yelping her excitement. Deep down, all I can feel is relief.

Perhaps this is the answer I needed to know if my feelings were right. Maybe I wasn’t making things up in my head after all.

Maybe Aragon does want me to stay… Perhaps even build a life for us with the child growing in my belly.

Smiling from ear to ear, I place a hand on my belly and take a deep breath. “Please don’t breathe a word of this to anyone. I would like to tell Aragon myself.”

Kairo fervently nods. “If you wanna tell him right now, he’s in the study on the second floor.”

“Thanks, Kairo,” I gently squeeze her hand before rushing off toward the castle.

It all makes sense now—those conflicting emotions building inside me. I have my hormones to thank for that. Now that my path is clear in front of me, I can focus on what I truly feel.

I don’t ever want to leave the island. I don’t have any reason to leave. I make a pitstop at the lab on my way to the second floor, giggling excitedly as I wait for my laptop to start up.
