She shakes her head. “The fire they’re breathing isn’t powerful enough to be lethal. They’re controlling it now for the sake of training.”

I nod slowly, even though I can’t imagine what their fires would be like in real combat if it appeared as deadly as it does now. A frightful shiver courses down my spine while I watch the powerful yet frightening training session.

The round ends when the crystalized tip of the first dragon touches the ground. Aragon steps into the ring, and I think he’s going to hand out instructions when the blonde man from earlier joins him.

“It’s Aragon’s turn,” Lily whispers in my ear, excitement evident in her gentle voice.

It’s the very same excitement I feel bubbling inside me as I tuck my bottom lip between my teeth. And watch him intently. He throws one glance over his shoulder—long enough to meet my eyes—before ripping off his tank top.

The act is mostly unnecessary, considering that the dragons retain their clothing when they shift back and forth. But right now, none of that matters when I enjoy the show he puts on.

Probably for me, I’d like to think. It’s a thought that swarms my mind as I watch the way his powerful ruby wings jut out of his back and the golden embellishments sparkle under the sunlight.

The other shifts I witnessed were magical. Aragon’s is magnificent as his arms and legs become scaly in the gorgeous ruby shade. The gold crystals on his shoulders form like crowned tips, and his tail protrudes from behind him, littered with gold trimmings.

My jaw drops in awe of how spectacular he is when he shifts into full dragon form. The last time I saw him as a dragon was when he’d carried me to the island. That was too close to see the full efficacy of this form. From up here, I see every intricate detail woven into the making of his dragon.

I can hardly think straight. All I really want to do is rush forward and have him swoop me into his powerful arms and carry me into the breezy air, flying off toward the clouds.

“... Aragon looks a lot like Draco, even in dragon form. But his colors are inverted.”

“Hm?” I snap out of my daze when Lily touches my thigh. “Sorry.”

She giggles. “You’re as stunned as I was the first time I saw the shift.”

“Yeah,” I chuckle nervously. “I’m mentally taking notes for my research.”

“Uh-huh,” Lily murmurs, sounding unconvinced.

In the meantime, my attention is taken away from Aragon and back to the real reason I’m still here.

The fossil.

In the time I’d been distracted by Aragon and how extraordinary he was in dragon form, I’d put my studies aside. Sadness lurks like a dark cloud over my head when I remember that it’s the only reason I get to be out.

It’s a means to an end. Aragon needs answers. He also needs to produce children for the clan. Once he gets everything he wants, I’ll just be disposable.

Watching him soar toward the open canopy, I whisper to Lily, “I need to go back to the lab.”

“Don’t you wanna watch the rest of training?”

I shake my head. “I have what I needed.”

I stare at the screen as the realization sets in. This is one part of my purpose on Aurora Island that is complete.

Where does this leave me now? A hand goes to my belly absentmindedly, wondering if our own encounter with passion was enough to conceive a child for the dragon shifter.

Will it be enough? Will he want more than one? Will I just get to leave with the promise that I don’t breathe a word of their existence to the rest of the world?

All these questions plague my mind. I haven’t even come to terms with the fact that I might become pregnant and birth a child. Is it something I can accept?

“You’re here…”

Aragon’s voice snaps me out of my inner conflict, causing me to gulp.

“Y-yes. I’m done,” I whisper, straightening my spine and turning my face toward him slowly.
