I turn back to the twins, who stare at the field with distinct glints in their eyes. “Why don’t you carry on playing?”

Stryder shrugs. “Brother isn’t interested anymore. Hey…” He looks down at me with a skeptically raised brow. “... Maybe you can get him to take up the sport again.”

I shrug dismissively, turning my face away when I feel the color seeping from my face. I can’t get him to do anything. Not even acknowledge the gift I’d given him on his birthday. Heck! He can’t even acknowledge that we’d slept together…

“What else can you show me?” I ask, pointedly changing the subject. My eyes land on the base of the mountain where a play park also lies dormant. “What about that?” I point to the park.

For obvious reasons, the twins groan.

“We’re not visiting the park, Yazmine,” Stryker chuckles. “None of us have been there in centuries. Tyson will probably grow up in there, just as we did.”

“And your kids—” Stryder adds, his voice cut short when I throw him a firm glare.

It’s been the order of the day every time either of them mentions the children I’ll have with Aragon. Despite the amount of warning glares I’ve thrown their way, they still remain adamant about mentioning it at every turn.

Almost as determined as my mind is on picturing scenes of Aragon in every corner. As we move along, I now stare at the park and imagine Aragon on the swings as a child, wondering endearingly what he was like a long time ago.

Whatever happened on his travels… Whatever he witnessed… It must have had a lasting effect on him. None of the stories I’ve heard about him seem fitting with his current character. The man who once led the rugby team isn’t the same man who I’ve met.

Why do I care, anyway? I shrug the thought aside, even as I envision him running around on the playground as a child. It’s not like—

“Hey, guys!”

Our group turns when we hear Lily’s voice from behind us. She stops a few feet away, propping her hands on her hips and glancing at the twins.

“Don’t tell me… Aragon has you two babysitting Yazmine again…” she grouches, shaking her head.

“That’s exactly what they’re doing,” I giggle. “But I don’t mind. They’re showing me around.”

Lily rolls her eyes as she walks over, sliding her arm through mine. “As lady dragon, I’m dismissing you of your duties,” she tells the twins. “I’ll take it from here.”

The two men nod sheepishly with hanging heads before turning and running off. Lily sighs and tightens her grip on my arm when we're alone.

“Good…” she beams at me. “There’s something I wanna show you.”

Lily drags me toward a building with an open rooftop. “Where are we going?”

“To the training arena,” she winks. “You’re gonna see Aragon in action.”

I stop abruptly, keeping my feet cemented to the ground. I don’t wish to see Aragon outside of the lab, especially not “in action.” It doesn’t help that I’d pictured him in every corner, my mind creating visions of him in different settings. My curiosity toward the dragon shifter has reached unimaginable heights that I don’t wish to explore.

“No, Lily,” I shake my head with refusal. “I don’t wanna be near him right now.”

Lily removes her arm from under mine and turns to face me. “Don’t tell me… You’re fighting?”

I chuckle nervously under my breath, shaking my head. “Not exactly. I just can’t stand to be around him.”

“I know what you mean…” she says softly. As she bats her eyelids at me, I know she’s about to tell me about her experience when she first met her mate.

How similarly the circumstances are… Except, they’re nothing alike. I’m sure of it. Unlike her, I cannot imagine a world where Aragon isn’t the grumpy brute he is. A future for us doesn’t exist.

Even if, deep down, I wish things were different. A feeling that I know has no rightful place to be there.

“Oh, no…” Lily groans as she peeks over my shoulder, brows knitting as she stares at the castle. “My son is awake.” She turns back to me and apologizes. “... I have to go. Will you be alright?”

I take account of my surroundings and nod. “I’ll be fine.” It’s not like the female dragons are anywhere. I haven’t caught a glimpse of them while I walked around with the twins. Perhaps the threat was all in my head.

Lily smiles apologetically before rushing off toward the stone castle. Looking like the princess running back to the castle that sprung out from a fairytale, I can’t help but giggle with a hand cupped over my mouth. My sense of reality is warped thanks to my short time on the island.
