How will I possibly face her tomorrow? How will I face my deeds, knowing that I can never truly accept her as my mate? Perhaps she will now become pregnant, have my child, and leave so that the guilt can finally leave me.

That’s all I can hope for.

“Morning, Aragon,” I’m greeted by Lily. She’s the first to enter the dining room, appearing cheerful and bubbly.

This is a stark contrast to how I’m feeling, having spent the night tossing and turning in the turmoil of my existence.

“Good morning, Lily,” I respond, forcing my lips into a smile. “You’re up early,” I comment, coming down much earlier than usual. I thought I’d get away with having breakfast and fleeing the confines of the castle long before the others woke up.

“I’m just excited,” she beams as she sits. “I’m meeting my family today in the city. It’s the last dress fitting before the wedding.”

“Oh, don’t bore him with the details of the wedding, Lils,” Kairo giggles when she comes in. “I’m sure Aragon has better things to do.”

“Yeah… Like tend to Yazmine,” Draco teases when he follows, throwing me a wink. “Have you already taken breakfast to your human?”

Fuck! I groan internally. Of all the days I could have chosen to be home, today isn’t ideal.

“No,” I reply, purposely reaching for my juice. “I’m sure one of you will do it.” Glancing at the women in the room, I’m hoping one of them takes the bait.

“Are you sure you won’t do it?” Kairo lifts a quizzical brow. “I mean… You were quite adamant yesterday.”

“Let’s not forget that he didn’t leave the lab at all yesterday,” Stryder teases as the rest of the gang enters the dining room. He wiggles his brows at me, so I throw him a firm glare.

Don’t… I warn mentally, sending the mind link strictly to Stryder. The amusement on his face slips off, and he quietly takes a seat.

I’m in no mood to be teased about the human, not after what happened yesterday. I’m rather thankful that I haven’t seen her all morning. But I know it’s only a matter of time before I face her again.

The reminder comes when father comes in, nodding at me knowingly. It feels like the responsibility of the dragon remains, which were discovered, rests heavily on my shoulders. I can’t disappoint him, neglecting this duty because of my personal vendettas.

I dull out the sounds of chatter in the room as everyone has breakfast and discusses the wedding. Only picking up on the important details, I stay out of the conversation. After all, why would anyone care what the grumpy brother thinks about the alpha and lady’s wedding in Seattle?

If it was up to me, I’d scrap the whole thing. A bunch of dragon shifters out in the human world isn’t the best idea. But then again, Draco is only doing it to appease his mate.

A foreign concept to me. I’ve barely wrapped my head around the fact that the human is to be my mate. Or is my mate, I remind myself. After yesterday, I’d leaped into that hole I’d dug for myself.

“... WIll Yazmine be attending the wedding?” Kairo asks.

“I’m sure she is,” Lily replies. “After all, we would have only met her for the first time at the wedding.”

I look up from my plate, realizing that the silence is a product of everyone eyeing me, awaiting my input. Clearing my throat, I lift my lips into a smile and say, “Yazmine won’t be coming to the wedding.”

“Why not?” Lily gasps, seemingly taken aback as she frowns.

I shrug nonchalantly and return to my meal. “Like you said, you would have only met her at the wedding. Now that she’s already here, she does no need to attend the wedding.”

“I’d like her to be there,” Lily insists. “She is one of us now.”

The reminder is all it takes to set me off, my blood simmering inside. She isn’t one of us.

She shouldn’t be!

My mistake only solidified the one thing I refused to accept. I don’t have to hear it, though, so I get to my feet and storm out of the room. Leaving my family to call after me, I can only pray that neither Draco nor Felix decides to follow me outside.

The gods know what I might do, fuming as I am right now. So much anger, so much guilt… It fuels the dragon and forces it to the fore as soon as I’m outside.

Flapping my wings, I send myself toward the clouds. I pass the mountaintop, blowing out the grandest breath of hot smoke once I’m far enough not to do damage. Down below, the meadow remains empty as no one dares to follow me.
