“I’ll let you know as soon as we find something,” I assure him, turning back to the dining room where the twins pile on heaps of food onto a plate for Yazmine. “Actually, I’m gonna give the sample myself.”

“Thanks, Son,” father appreciates, filling me with pride. Now that I know the importance of the bone, I feel like it’s my responsibility to see it through.

“Here… Let me…” I stretch my arm out at Stryker when I return to the dining room. He frowns but hands me the plate nonetheless. My earlier annoyance has me throwing off the piece of cake.

No cake for her. It’s not like she’s deserving of it.

“Don’t worry about the sample,” I tell the twins. “I’ll do it myself.”

Heading out of the dining room, I take the corner leading into the lab, when suddenly I’m frozen to the spot. Unmoving, my feet feel lead, my eyes fixed on the sight before me.

Leaning over the bone on the table is a woman I do not recognize. Not that I’m uncertain that it’s Yazmine—I can tell from the goggles shielding her eyes and the latex gloves on her hands. She’s unrecognizable because she isn’t wearing loose-fitting clothing today or dressed like a man.

Instead, she’s wearing a tight-fitting dress. One that hugs every flare and dip of her perfect curves. It fits her like a glove, the golden tresses accentuating her natural body. My eyes trace how her tiny waist flares out into the most extraordinary, full hips. Bent over that way, the perky mounds of her rear have my palms tingling with the need to feel her beneath my touch.

The explicit awareness sends arousal to my core, straining at my groin and threatening to pull taut at the crotch of my pants.

I clear my throat to clear my mind of the vile thoughts running through my mind. But it only turns out to be my undoing when I draw Yazmine’s attention to me. That’s when I’m hit with the marvelous view of the front of her dress and how the neckline dips to reveal her full breasts.

“Aragon?” she perks speculatively, lifting a brow. She places a hand on her hips and watches me intently as I make my way toward her, my steps mechanical as if I’m drawn closer by an invisible pull.

“I—erm—” I clear my throat again, dragging my eyes away reluctantly. “Here’s breakfast.”

“Thanks,” she murmurs, pointing at the table and lifting the goggles off her face. I make the grave mistake of staring, meeting her eyes, and falling into the rabbit hole of the golden specks sparkling in the emerald depths of her eyes. Like I’m hypnotized, I have to remind myself that this isn’t right.

I gulp, hard, tearing my gaze away in fear of succumbing to the urges that threaten to have me throwing caution to the wind. Throwing away all my prior inhibitions and entertaining the idea of Yazmine being my mate.

The thought is heinous, and I have to force myself to turn around and leave the lab. I know I’m supposed to give her a sample of my blood. I know that I have more important things to take care of.

I just… can’t right now.

“Aragon…” she calls sheepishly from behind.

Slowly, I turn back around when she throws something through the air. I catch it thanks to my quick reflexes, opening my hand to find a pendant the size of half of my palm.

Not just any pendant, but an ivory one in the shape of a rugby ball. I trace the intricate patterns, realizing the smooth texture is from the dragon bone.

“Happy birthday,” she says, a fleeting smile crossing her face before she places the goggles over her eyes and turns back to her work.

That’s when I realized how wrong I’d been.

She had been planning on attending the breakfast party—that’s why she’d dressed up for it.

Not only that, she’d gone as far as carving a pendant for me.

How does she know?

Why does she care?

Chapter 14 - Yazmine

Throwing myself into my work, I don’t have to think about the dragon shifter and his lack of humanity.

That’s why he hates humans. He doesn’t have a heart!

“Urgh!” I grunt irritably as I step into the lab in the golden dress. It’s not ideal for work, but it’ll have to suffice for now before I end up spilling these godforsaken tears…

Deep breaths… Easy does it….
