The Cube of Knowledge does not overshadow what I already know.

“I’m sorry, brother,” I say matter-of-factly. “I can’t accept this. I don’t want it.”

Draco finally takes a step closer, prompting me to search my surroundings for a way to escape. There’s a door on the left…

“You don’t have a choice, Aragon,” he informs me sternly, leaving me no choice but to stand there and listen. “It’s already been done. The Council has chosen your human mate, and an invite has been sent to her.”

I do a double-take at my brother as I shake my head. “An invite? What are you talking about, Draco?”

“After what happened with Lily and I, the Council thought it best not to use force. The human—your human—has been invited to the wedding next month.”

Using the term ‘your human’ leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Swirling the acrid bile as it rises to the surface like phlegm, my tummy churns as if I’m about to throw up.

“So you’re telling me we’re just gonna invite humans to the island?” The notion sounds absurd to my ears as the words wrestle from my lips. “After spending so much time and resources to keep the island hidden?”

“She isn’t being invited to the island, Aragon. She’s invited to the wedding, where you’ll explain the situation and bring her to Aurora Island willingly.”

My dragon is compelled to turn the entire gathering into ashes this time. Peering over Draco’s shoulder, I see into the boardroom where the council continues their meeting. They don’t care about how any of us feel.

Turning back to my brother, I realize he doesn’t care either. He’s too caught up in his little bubble where his human mate is fated to him and has become immortal by carrying his child.

I don’t believe in luck. Perhaps luck had been on the alpha’s side, but not all of us can be lucky. I would know…

“This is a mistake, Draco. Think about it,” I plead, letting my anger subside in a last-ditch attempt to get through to him. “What you have with Lily might be real, but it won’t happen again. And now the Council is revealing our secrets to the humans? Unbelievable!”

“Believe it,” Draco says firmly as he tilts his chin up with domineering intent. “Even I agree that we won’t use force again.”

“I don’t want to be a part of this,” I refuse as I shake my head.

“Like I said before, Aragon, you don’t have a choice.”

Chapter 2 - Yazmine

“This can’t be right,” I frown as I read the results on the gauge. “It has absolutely no reaction to the clock.”

“Did you mix it right?” James, my partner in fossil crimes, chimes in through the millions of questions racing through my mind.

I remove the glasses from my face, ensuring he sees the contrite look on my face when I raise a skeptical brow.

“Sorry,” he shrugs apologetically. “I know you probably did. I’m just trying to rule that out.”

“Yeah, sure,” I scoff, rolling my eyes as I replace the glasses on my face before flipping down the protective cover on my face shield. Turning back to the fossil on the table, I swirl the vial containing a perfect blend of carbon and potassium before using the dripper to extract enough into the syringe.

I drip the mixture of elements on the bulbous tip of the ivory bone and step back to wait for the reaction. The silence that stretches ahead only serves to prove another negative outcome.

The chemical mixture rolls down the side of the bone, dripping onto the metal sheet underneath. There is no sizzle, no reaction to the bone that should have simmered as if it was burned by hot flames.

“Nothing,” James announces as if it isn’t common knowledge at this point.

I hold the vial out to him. “Add more carbon into this,” I instruct him before removing the shield with a heavy-hearted sigh.

We’d been trying for hours to get this bone to react to the decaying properties of the chemical mixture. Trying and failing dismally.

It’s never happened before.

Rolling in the microscope, I pull the lens over the bone and sit behind the table.

“You’ve run every other test to ensure it’s not man-made?” I ask for the confirmation for the umpteenth time.
