“A DNA sample?” I frown as I near her, peering over her head at the screen. There’s a bunch of figures and formulas that make no sense to me, forcing me to narrow my eyes at the screen until I remember that it’s of no importance.

It’s not like I care about her work. At least, I shouldn’t.

Clearing my throat—more for my sake than hers—it draws her attention to me. The moment our eyes meet, it’s as if time slows down in the familiar way it would when you’ve missed the presence of someone important.

No.

I mentally chide, repeating the single, simple word like a mantra to remind myself that those feelings don’t exist.

It’s something I found that I needed to do when I came back from Sacramento. Having seen her asleep upstairs, I’d caught myself staring at her sleeping face and wondering what I would have felt if I hadn’t allowed Delilah to break my heart.

Would I have been open to the idea of having Yazmine as my mate?

Impossible.

She’s just a weak human, after all.

“Yes, I’ll need your DNA sample to trace the age of the bone.”

“Will you be able to determine if it belongs to our clan?”

Yazmine nods. “Only once I’ve studied your DNA.” She lifts a metal tray from the desk that contains needles and vials before turning to me.

When her eyes settle on my tattooed arm, it sprouts goosebumps over my flesh. The stark awareness is unsettling, knowing her eyes trace every contour of my arm with keen interest.

“No,” I blurt out, instinctively crossing my arms behind my back. The feeling of awareness is unwelcome, causing me to go into defensive-mode. The thought of her having to touch me to get a sample makes me gulp uncomfortably. “You can get your sample from the twins. That’s what they’re here for.”

Without waiting for her reply, I spin on my heels and leave the room, absentmindedly stroking my arm as I march down the hallway. Imagining her fingertips tracing my skin to find a suitable vein to extract blood from… Imagining the warmth of those fingertips…

Images that I don’t want in my head.

Chapter 12 - Yazmine

“Yazmine! There you are!”

The familiar sing-song voice is pleasant, jolting me from the daze of watching Aragon flee when I asked for a blood sample.

It’s doubtful that the dragon shifter is afraid of needles. But when he refused my request, he left me in deep confusion, wondering why he didn’t want me to take a sample.

Nonetheless, I turn in the swivel chair to find Lily coming in. Smiling at her, I’m pleasantly surprised to see she’s not alone.

A young, petite woman with the sunniest blonde curls and radiant green eyes comes bouncing in behind Lily.

“Hi, Yazmine!” she greets cheerfully, rushing forward with an outstretched hand. “I’m Kairo.”

“Kairo?” I smile as I shake the woman’s hand, noting how warm it is. Hot, even. “You’re a dragon,” I observe, to which she nods.

“I’m Aragon’s sister,” she explains, stepping beside Lily and wearing the most genuine smile on her lips.

“All done!” One of the twins calls from behind them when he’s placed the last bone on the table. “Do you need anything else, Yazmine?”

Craning my neck to one side, I shake my head at him. I haven’t figured out who Stryder and Stryker are between the two. They’re identical, and it will take some time to discover a distinct difference between them to tell them apart.

“That’s all for now,” I tell both of them when the other twin stands beside his brother. “What you can do is pop in first thing tomorrow morning. Before breakfast. I need some blood samples.”

The twins nod before leaving the lab. I smile warmly, turning my attention to their sister. None of it seems to add up. The grumpy dragon is nothing like his siblings. And while I could have taken their samples right now, I’m more interested in meeting the sister.

Perhaps it has to do with the sheer vibrance of her aura. Also, she seems close to the only other human I’ve met, her hand resting on Lily’s shoulder.
