God! I hate him!

Chapter 11 - Aragon

I stand outside the bedroom door, contemplating my life’s decisions while simultaneously wondering if I’m doing the right thing.

I probably am; it just doesn’t feel that way right now. Not when I despise the human this much, her mere existence infuriating every second that ticks by. Lifting my face to the ceiling, I draw in a breath that I can only hope is from the heavens to provide me the strength to go on.

Another day of having to put up with her. Great! I huff as I throw open the door and call out from behind it, “Come on! We’re going to the lab.”

Waiting outside in the hallway, I cross my arms as my patience begins running a fine thread. That thread is about to snap and cause me to go in and drag her out. Luckily for her, she finally comes out of the bedroom.

It’s her first time outside the door, I realize when she takes in her surroundings with an appreciative glint in her eyes.

“Woah! So this is what the inside of a castle looks like!”

I can’t help but chuckle bemusedly despite my reservations. It makes sense that she’ll find novelty in the castle. I guess the novelty died years ago after growing up and living here for hundreds of years.

“You’ll be allowed to explore the rest of the castle as soon as you’ve given me what I want,” I say sternly as she follows me to the lift. One long stride of mine takes her longer to catch up. I didn’t realize how tiny she is in stature until now. It’s almost amusing—if I wasn’t so frustrated.

“I’m not telling you where we discovered the fossil until I see that it’s here, still intact,” she challenges, arms crossed as she steps inside the lift.

Rolling my eyes, I punch the key that will send us to the ground floor. Scoffing, I ask, “What? You don’t trust me?”

“I wouldn’t trust anyone who kidnaps a woman,” she bites back scornfully.

I grunt low under my breath, the ride down made in terse silence as I refuse to tell her anything else. According to my sister, Kairo, Lily wasn’t as opposed to the idea of force as Yazmine is.

She can’t see the bigger picture here; I get that. But for a woman of her caliber, she’s not as bright as she’s supposed to be.

“In here,” I point to the door of the study once we’ve exited the lift. Not so much a study anymore, we’d converted it into a lab. With all of Yazmine’s equipment ready to be utilized, her laptop on the desk.

“Oh…” she murmurs, seemingly stunned when she stands at the door. It’s clear to see that she hadn’t been expecting to find everything set up in the way it has. She proceeds toward the bone, resting a hand on top. Her shoulders relax as she stares at the bone and she sighs a breath of relief.

“New Zealand,” she throws over her shoulder. “The excavation was in New Zealand.”

Stunned, I stand at the door of the study-cum-lab, a frown growing on my face. I didn’t think it would be this easy. All I had to do was bring her to the bone, and she was spewing out the information I needed.

Perhaps her research is more important to her than anything in the world. It’s something I never considered, and it’s probably why she wanted to go back home so badly.

While I’m frozen to the spot, she heads to her laptop and begins typing away. “Here,” she says, lifting her face to me and pointing at the screen. “This is the exact location of the cave.”

I’m prompted into motion when she raises expectant brows at me. My mind still reels from the easiness of this whole thing. I’d been expecting her to put up a fight, to resist giving me what I want. Suddenly, I’m remorseful about the way I’d been behaving.

“Right here…” she points at the map on the screen. “That’s where we found this bone.”

Clearing my throat, I inform her, “It is a dragon bone. There’s no doubt about it.”

Yazmine steps back and nods. “That’s what I figured. But I would still like continue studying it. How old it is. Why it doesn’t decay like other fossils,” she explains.

I turn to her and notice the fire sparked in her eyes. “It doesn’t decay because we’re immortal,” I remind her.

She nods slowly, evidently taking in the information as she turns toward the bone. “I want to know the whys and hows.”

Standing behind her, watching the way she inspects the bone with dainty fingers and calculated strokes, I can’t help but lose myself momentarily in awe of her.

“Aragon…”

When she says my name, I’m snapped out of the momentary daze and back to reality. I don’t know where my head just went, but I need to get it together.
