I gasp as if the words have cut through me like a sharp knife. The man calmly leaves the bedroom, the thud of the door startling me as it echoes in the room. I’m frozen to the spot, unable to form a coherent thought while everything he said races through my mind.

It hasn’t given me much clarity. His brutally honest admission of why I’m here only serves to drive in the realization that I know so little about dragons.

A day ago, I wasn’t even sure that they existed. I’d been convinced that I was hallucinating. Now, I have to accept that I’m meant to be his mate.

His blatant hatred for humans doesn’t make this an easy pill to swallow. My life feels like it’s in danger, although he hasn’t given me a reason to be fearful for my life. Still, I can’t accept my fate. I belong in the real world, researching fossils and adding my research to extensions of history books.

Not here, locked away in the strange bedroom in a castle, meant to be the dragon shifter’s concubine.

It’s too much for me to digest. All I know is that I have to find a way out. We all have a choice, and this isn’t mine.

Chapter 7 - Aragon

I let out a breath of utter relief as soon as I’m outside the guest bedroom where the human is being kept. Frustrated to the point of curling fists, I drag myself to my bedroom to shower.

When I step into the shower stall, relief washes over me through the warm water from the shower spray. Washing away the heavy sweat I’d built up in the gym this morning and the irritation brought on by the human.

I can’t imagine having to mate with her. But I don’t have a choice, as much as I despise the idea. Now that she’s here without family who might notice she’s gone, I must get to work.

Mating with a female who would bear my children wasn’t meant to be such a heinous task. But then again, my ideal mate was never a human.

When images of the woman flash behind my eyelids, the pleasure of the shower loses its decadence, forcing me to smash down the tap to halt the spray. I open my eyes and glare at the tiles in front of me as if the spaces between each tile are responsible for my mental state.

Angrily huffing, I step out and proceed to get dressed for the day. Again, I’m a man on a mission, heading downstairs to prepare a plate of eggs and bacon for the human.

I might oppose this whole thing, but I’m not inhumane.

“Good morning, Aragon,” Kairo greets cheerfully when she finds me in the kitchen stacking a plate with breakfast.

I groan inwardly as I shove a fork into the scrambled eggs. I thought that by coming down earlier, I wouldn’t have to encounter the questions that come with filling a plate and taking it upstairs.

“Morning…” I mumble with a shrug, turning around and offering her a forced smile.

I notice the questioning look on her furrowed brows but ignore it by walking away and heading upstairs. All I do is open the bedroom door and slide the plate in before locking it again.

My conscience can rest this way. At least long enough to be done with this fiasco. I can manage that. To be amicable enough until she’s given me what I want and then I can be rid of her.

When I enter the dining room, a weary silence falls on my family members gathered there for breakfast. Clearing my throat, I take my seat and reach for a slice of toast.

“The human is here, in my quarters,” I announce matter-of-factly before taking a bite of my toast.

The only sound in the room is the crunching of my deliberate chewing. I look up to find all eyes on me—as expected. Swallowing steadily, I pour out a glass of orange juice. I’m about to tip the glass to my lips when father finally addresses me.

“How is the human here?” he asks, prompting me to turn my attention to the head of the table.

“I brought her here,” I shrug, taking my sip of juice to wash down the toast. “Yesterday, actually.”

“Did she agree to come here with you?”

I shake my head at my father’s question. “I brought her here to fulfill the mating process. It doesn’t matter if she agreed or not.”

The slam of a palm on the table draws everyone’s attention to Draco at the fore.

“We decided not to use force!” he roars, glancing at Lily beside him as she tries to calm him down by placing a hand on his arm. “No!” he refutes her attempt, snatching his arm away and rising to his feet, glaring at me. “What have you done, Aragon?”

“I only did what I needed to do,” I reply flatly. “No one else seemed to care that we might be in danger of being ousted.”

Across the table, Felix coughs into his hand. At least he shares my sentiments. But I’m faced with the brutal condemnation of the rest of my family.
