Already, she’s regretting this. I want to punch something.

“Of course,” I say, gritting my teeth. “Give me a minute, I’ll walk you to your car.”

“No,” she says, glancing down and blushing furiously. “You don’t have to?—”

“Wait for me, Natalie, or I will follow you to the damn parking lot naked. You’re not walking down there alone.”

I pull on my clothes as fast as I can, in case she thinks I’m lying. I’m not about to let the woman walk into a parking lot after dark, not even in my own apartment complex, and it has nothing to do with the fact that I was hired to help guard her.

Her eyes stray more than once in the direction of Nic’s door as we walk. I don’t know what to say to make this less of a clusterfuck. I pull open the door of her car but stop her before she can climb inside.

“Natalie.” I wait until she meets my eyes. “I had fun tonight.”

Her mouth trembles, and she tries to smile. Fun is obviously the wrong fucking word to use. “Me, too.”

“Damn it.” I don’t want to crowd her when she so clearly wants to leave, but I can’t let the night end this way. I know if I do, she’s never going to look at me again.

Except when I show up at her office tomorrow and every morning for the foreseeable future. God damn it.

“I can’t change what just happened,” I say, helpless to tell her anything but the truth. “I wouldn’t even if I could. Nic is a grown man. Once he saw us together earlier, I bet you anything he did what everybody does: he put on his headphones as soon as he closed the door.”

She blinks slowly, taking in my words. Her shoulders relax ever so slightly.

“You think so?”

“I really do. It was just a fantasy. Sexy talk. You seemed to like it, so I went for it. If I crossed a line there, I’ll apologize.”

She smiles a little, but it’s a real smile with a hint of heat and humor behind it.

“You could argue that I’m the one who crossed the line.”

“Lady, you can cross that line with me anytime.” Keeping my eyes on hers, I bend slowly, stealing a kiss. We’re alone out here, but I don’t press. Natalie is long-game material, and I don’t want to fuck this up any more than I already have tonight.

“Thanks, Finn.”

“Anytime.” Her lips quirk at that, making me grin. “I mean that. You get the urge for a pick-me-up with your coffee break, you just say the word. I’ll be there, ready to serve.”

She laughs, smacking me lightly on the chest before climbing into her car.

“I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Wouldn’t miss it.”

The apartment feels empty now that she’s gone. I shut the door behind me, leaning back against it, eyeing the table in my hall that will forever remind me of what just happened here. The memory, the scent of her and sex in the air, plumps my cock right back up. Sliding my hand over the fly of my jeans, I press down hard, needing the friction. We’d barely taken the edge off, and all I can think about is the next time I see her.

That word again. More.

A noise breaks the silence, a rough groan. A man’s voice.

Nic.

It’s muffled and abbreviated, but there’s no mistaking that sound. My breath catches in my throat. I wait, my hand frozen on my dick.

Another one.

It’s close by, too, no further into the apartment than that table in my hallway.

Jesus, if he’s—if I can hear him that clearly?—
