“Until next time,” he smirked.

Burning hot sweat stole down my spine. I took my folders and hurried away, praying no one could tell what we had just done. Even with the embarrassment, though, a small smile crept over my lips.

That was some of the best sex I’d ever had.

I remained on cloud nine until after my meeting with HR. It was pretty cut and dry, but as I stepped out of their office and checked my phone for alerts, one email in particular caught my attention.

My gut dropped.

It was a second receipt for an advanced payment for my mother.

“Fuck!”

This week was so hectic that I completely forgot to cancel Eli’s payment. And now he’d gone and made a second one?

What the hell was he playing at?

“I’ve canceled your eleven o’clock for tomorrow, and the Charity gala for next week is asking if you can do a recording if you’re unable to attend in person.”

My assistant, Hannah, stood before me, going through the check list in her hands.

“I think that’s everything. Do you need me for anything else?”

“No, Hannah. That’s all, thank you.” I waved her away, then waited until she had left my office before I turned around and reached for my phone.

Ever since I started this project with Sawyer, everything else has taken a back seat but it was for the best. What Sawyer was trying to do was admirable and it was exactly the sort of thing I was more than happy to finance. The only problem was that the longer we worked on this, the more people found out.

And one of them was likely to be a problem. The phone call I’d received this morning had also shown that a lot of the friction would be coming from the same side.

So, I called Sawyer.

The line rang out three times before he answered.

“What?”

“Hello to you, too.”

“Sorry, long day.”

“I wanted to see if your lawyer had found a path through the patent issue yet.”

Sawyer sighed. “No. If anything, I think the best thing for us to do is just change angles. What we have is good, and I don’t want this to get wrapped up in legal battles for years and then never hit the shelves. I don’t know what we need to change, but it has to be something.”

“Back to the drawing board?” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “A new applicator, maybe. Definitely a new name.”

Sawyer snorted. “Definitely.”

“I actually wanted to mention one more thing.”

“Hmm?”

“I received a call this morning. From Marcus Crane.”

“What?” Sawyer’s tone immediately changed from light to sharp.
