“I have to find Bianca,” I realized, straightening my dress. Together, we stumbled out of the bathroom but as I turned the corner, I ran into someone who shot out a hand to catch me and stop me from falling. Kane did the same, and his hand closed over my opposite shoulder as I stumbled.
“I’m so sorry!”
“It’s all good,” said a warm voice. I glanced up, and Liam’s gorgeous eyes twinkled at me. He glanced down at me, then over to Kane. The smile on his face turned into a knowing smirk. With a wink, he moved past us to the bathroom as heat flooded my cheeks.
“Was that Liam Hall?” Kane asked as we were swallowed up by the crowd.
I didn’t reply, distracted by Kane’s hand lingering on the small of my back as we fought out the bar once more. Liam catching me stumbling out of the bathroom with Kane had been terribly unexpected, and as reality set in, guilt nestled under my ribs like a bubble of static.
Did this count as cheating? Sawyer and I weren’t together, but that didn’t mean things were okay.
We located Bianca at the bar and Kane stepped away with a promise to get us some water. Keeping an eye on him so he didn’t hear, I clutched at Bianca who immediately turned away from her new date.
“Chick? What’s wrong?”
“I just— I just fucked Kane.”
“What?” Bianca squealed, beaming at me. “Look at you!”
“No!” I said hurriedly. “I’m— it was amazing but I feel so guilty now because this morning with Sawyer.”
“Why?” Bianca’s brow dipped and she cupped my face, smiling. “Honey, you guys aren’t a couple. You’re young, sexy, and single. You had a quickie with a hot guy in a bar. That’s life. Enjoy it!
Surprisingly, her words soothed the majority of the guilt threatening to flood my throat and I nodded.
I’m single. And like I said to Sawyer, I don’t belong to anyone.
“You deserve it,” Bianca grinned. “Enjoy yourself!”

CALLIE
Things were growing tense.
As the days trickled by, Kane and Sawyer became locked in negotiations on everything from the price all the way down to the patent name; and they disagreed on most of these details. My work days were filled constantly with fielding calls, rescheduling meetings and appointments, and even ignoring a few calls from the press who had noticed Kane’s recurring trips over here.
Despite their attempts to keep everything on the down low, there was always one thread that slipped out. During lunch, I suggested the two of them have a very public brawl to make it look like they were remaining enemies. Kane was game, but Sawyer looked like I had just spat on his mother’s crystal flower collection.
He wasn’t a brawler. Got it.
However, one other detail cropped up near the end of the week that brought all other issues to a halt. Sawyer’s lawyer had found conflict with one of the suggested patents, but other than setting up a meeting and providing tea, all of that was beyond my understanding. Judging by how Sawyer and Kane no longer joked with one another, I only knew that it was important. Instead, they became like two peas in a pod, focused on a fix.
