“He’s a fucking dick, isn’t he?”
Julia laughed loudly.
“Go on, say it… He’s a fucking dick.”
Julia laughed more and sank under the bubbles coming up for air and spitting bubbles out.
“Think how good it will feel to say it. Get it out. He’s a fucking dick.”
Julia’s eyes glittered as they met Vic’s. “He is. Honestly. He’s such a fucking dick.”
Neither of them could stop laughing. Vic didn’t think she had ever seen Julia more real or more beautiful.
When they finally stopped laughing, Vic held Julia’s hand and rubbed it. She could hear Hyzenthlay’s settled breathing next to her.
“Well, it looks like Hyzenthlay is asleep. Maybe Watership Down can wait until another night?”
“Have you got other ideas, Victoria?”
“One or two,” Vic replied and winked.

Two weeks had flown by, and Julia realised she had been at the castle in Vic’s bed every single night.
She was just eating lunch when her phone rang. Julia accepted the call. “Hey Mum, how is NYC?”
“Oh, my favourite place in the world, as usual, my darling. It would only be better if you were here. How are you and what have you been doing with your evenings? You seem like you have been very busy when I’ve called.”
Julia knew she had been avoiding taking her mum’s calls when she was with Vic. Here she had been caught out. She was close to her mum; she didn’t know why she was hiding anything.
“Well, I’m seeing someone, Mum. It’s been really great actually.”
Julia could sense her mother smiling on the other end of the line. “Ooooh, tell me more. I did wonder if this is what was coming. What is she like? What’s her name?”
“Well, her name is Victoria.”
“How very English.” They both laughed.
“She’s, well. Different.”
“She’s not royalty, is she?”
Julia laughed. “No. Thank god. She’s Queen Alexandra’s best friend. So that could be complicated in itself, but she makes me laugh. She makes me happy. She’s vibrant, passionate, smart, caring. She’s a single mother. I think you would like her.”
“My darling, I cannot wait to meet her. I want to schedule a trip to London later this year. I need to spend some time with you and meet Victoria. You sound happy, you know. You sound like a teenager in first love. Is that how it feels?”
Julia thought for a second. Vic was encompassing her every waking thought and when she wasn’t working, she was going straight to the castle to see Vic.
“That’s exactly how it feels.”
“Then, you enjoy it, my love. It is a rare and beautiful thing to love like that.”
“I can’t wait to see you, Mum.”
“I can’t wait either, my darling. You have a good day and don’t work too hard.”
“I won’t. Bye, mum. I love you.”
