“Yes.”

I positioned myself behind her and put my body on hers. I instructed her on how to hold the bat. My hands wrapped around hers as she held the bat. “You want the bat here and then swing. You want to swing nice and fluid motion; you don’t need a hard swing to hit the ball. Ready?”

She nodded as she focused.

The ball came fast, and with me still assisting her, I helped her hit the ball. “Let’s do it one more time.” We hit the ball again.

“Got it?” I asked.

“Yeah, I think so.”

I released myself and got in position at one next to her. Every four cages were separated by partitions for privacy. In a way, it was private besides overhearing people when they talked. But tonight, we mostly had the place to ourselves.

The ball came, I swung my bat, and I hit the ball hard. I watched as Brielle did her first one by herself. “You got it,” I told her.

Following my previous instructions, she held the bat correctly, and when the ball came, she connected with it, sending the ball back to where it came from. “Oh my god. I did it!” She cheered.

“You’re a natural.”

Out of the next five, she was able to hit three of them. “Want to take a little break?”

“Yeah. I’m sweating.”

We sat at the small table, finished our drink, and poured another.

“This is so much fun,” she said cheerfully.

“It is. If you can’t find me anywhere, I’m usually here.”

“Did you come here that night you went out?”

“Yeah. I even ran into a friend, and we played for a little while. Hence why I came home drunk.”

“Are you going to be able to drive home from here?”

“I’ll call a driver my family uses sometimes.”

Chapter Seven

BRIELLE

I think we played at the batting cages for a good hour and a half. My arms felt like jelly since I wasn’t used to it.

“How come you brought me here tonight?”

“I don’t know. I just wanted you to see it. And outside of my few friends, I’ve never brought anyone here. This is my safe space. No one can tell me what to do or expect anything from me.”

“I appreciate you trusting me and bringing me here. I definitely want to come back sometime.”

I smiled wide. “You do?”

She nodded. “I do. You might not know, but I’m pretty active. I like to be doing something when I can.”

“Ah, yes.” I remembered she was a runner as well. “You ready to head home?”

“Sure.”

I watched as he texted someone, and ten minutes later, we were getting in the back of an SUV.
