He tilted his head, and I tried to amend my sentence, but I meant it.

“Your job is scary. It’s hard watching you skate onto the ice, knowing it could be the last time I see you.”

“Bash?” Em sat on the other side of me and wrapped her arm around my waist. “Did tonight make you think of Rob?”

I nodded.

“Me too,” she whispered.

“We barely recovered.”

“I know.”

“I can’t lose him, too.”

“Hey,” Michael crooned. “You haven’t lost me, okay?”

“But—”

“No buts. Yeah, my job is high risk, but it’s terrifying to think I could lose you because you’re scared of losing me.”

“It’s really scary, though.”

“Love is scary, Bash.” Em leaned her head on my shoulder, and I rested my chin in her soft curls. “I was so scared for so long to tell you how I felt because I thought it would ruin our friendship.”

“But it only made it better.”

“Exactly. That’s why we all need to have a serious discussion. Bash, you have to come to terms with the fact our boyfriend has a high-risk job. Can you do that?”

“Boyfriend?” Mac beamed. “I like the sound of that.”

Em smiled and rubbed his leg. “Me too.”

I nodded and puffed out an exhale. “Yes. As long as I don’t have to love that he’s an adrenaline junky.”

Mac laughed and stretched forward. I stopped him before he hurt his ribs and stooped down to kiss him. He melted against my mouth and my chest unfurled, finally accepting he was okay.

“None of us know how long we have, so I’m going to love the two of you ferociously with every single minute I have on this planet,” he said when I sat back.

“Good,” I murmured, lightly tracing over his chest, avoiding his ribs.

“And Mac,” Em said, turning her attention to him. “You have to trust that regardless of what we’re wearing, you’re the only one on our minds and we’re the ones you come home with after a game.”

His mouth twisted into a coy smile, and he reached out for her to grasp his fingers. “But you have to admit, the two of you look great in my number.”

Em’s cheeks turned pink, and she averted her eyes. “Maybe.”

“Maybe,” he scoffed. “Did you see how great I played once you put my jersey on?”

“Why’d you think I put it on her?”

His eyes widened as he studied me. “You never cease to amaze me, Sebastian.”

My toes curled at the sound of my name on his lips. The room we were in was stifling. I wanted to lift him out of that bed and race home, where I’d tell him to say my name until we passed out.

His rib probably wouldn’t hold up to all the things I wanted to do to him. I could still tease him, though.

“The things I’m going to do to you when your body heals, Savage—”
