The last thing I wanted was a confrontation, especially in a restaurant, but I needed to do something. I had to get Mac out of there before they destroyed him any further.

“I can’t believe you would say that about your son.”

Richard and Joanie’s eyes snapped to mine, but I wasn’t finished.

I set my napkin on the table and tugged Mac’s off his lap. “Shame on you. This guy deserves parents who appreciate him. Life is short and all you’ve done is waste your time complaining about someone who strives to be perfect for you.” I gripped Mac’s hand under the table to hide my nerves. “He has opened my heart in a way that no one else ever has. He’s a damn treasure and you would know that if you took the time to truly get to know him.”

The two of them stared at me. I waited a second for them to speak, but neither did.

I pulled Mac to his feet. “We’re leaving.”

“That’s obvious,” Richard muttered.

Mac stared at them, rooted in place as I itched to run. The silence stretched on as he watched and watched. Finally, he opened his mouth, and I held my breath.

“Goodbye.”

One word. Simple. No visible emotion.

But it wasn’t a simple goodbye.

It was a final farewell.

I wasn’t sure if the future would hold any reparations for them, but I would support him if he never wanted to subject himself to their presence again.

“Let’s pay and get out of here.”

“They can pay,” Mac said, turning on his heel and pulling me with him.

“Are you sure—”

“They live off my salary. It’s me paying, anyway.”

“Oh, that stops tonight.”

He turned, his wicked smile back in full force. “Obviously.”

“What you said back there—I know you didn’t mean any of it—but I really appreciate it.”

“Mac—” I cleared my throat and thought I was going to vomit. “I meant it.”

He stopped walking, and I froze when I saw his blanched face.

“You did?”

“Every word.”

“Why do you hate me, then?”

“I don’t hate you—”

“Emily can see it, too.”

“I don’t hate you.” I stared at the sky, hoping the answer I needed was somewhere in the stars. “I was hurt. It—it hurt when you ghosted me.”
