It smelled like Bash.

I bought that candle.

His eyes narrowed as he studied my face. “What’s wrong?”

I shrugged and slipped my shoes off. “This day’s always hard.”

“Yes, but you’re upset about something else, too.” He covered my hand with his and led me over to the family room.

Sebastian sat down and pulled me down next to him. Our thighs were touching and, normally, I would have tried to focus on anything but the way his proximity made me heady.

Not this time.

No. It was easier—and much more enjoyable—to focus on the warmth of his touch than it was to think about why I was crying.

“What is it, Em?” His perfectly groomed eyebrows furrowed, covered slightly by an errant brown curl.

“At work this morning—” I sucked in a breath so big I felt lightheaded. “I thought they were going to promote me.”

“Didn’t they?”

“They fired me.”

His eyes bulged, and a muscle in his jaw jumped. “They let you work all day and then fired you?”

“No.” I hung my head so he couldn’t see the shame written across my face. I wasn’t even good enough for them to take advantage of me like that.

“No?” His voice was soft and soothing, but the shame still burned through me as I relived that morning.

The managers hadn’t even found it worth their time to come in and fire me themselves.

“That email wasn’t actually for a meeting. It was so they could fire me before anyone got there. Before they even got there.”

“Who fired you then?”

“Molly.”

“What a bitch.”

“Hey. No.” I smacked his chest and lifted my hand away from him quickly when my stomach coiled. “She was just doing her job.”

He quirked an eyebrow and rubbed my shoulder. “She fired you at seven in the morning. I can call her whatever I want. I have worse names for your managers.” He practically spat their names. “Tim and?”

“Tim and Jordan.”

Sebastian twisted his face like he’d eaten a lemon. “Well, forget their names. They’re no longer in our lives.”

“Done.”

“Good.” He pulled me closer, nestling my shoulder against him. “So, where’d you go the rest of the day?”

I pressed my eyes shut and tried to force the images of Bryce’s glistening dick out of my mind.

“I stopped by Bryce’s—”

“Bryce,” Sebastian snarled.

“Remind me never to get on your bad side.”
