A visible vein throbs in her temple. “Fuck you.”

“Isn’t that the problem?” I tip my head toward the window where Dr. Pinney remains working on the other side. “You want him to, but he’s not interested in a washed-up hag like you.”

Her face and neck turn a mottled shade of red, her words flying out with spittle. “You bitch!”

She charges at me, but I’m prepared. I punch her in the stomach, catching her off guard. While she’s wheezing, I shove her back against the wall, pinning her wrists in place.

I slam her hand holding the blade against the hard surface, dodging her attempts at head butting me again. Finally, with a cry of pain, she drops the blade.

When I meet her glaring eyes, something clicks. I don’t register the blood pouring from my nose or my bleeding arm and hand. All I’m aware of is the determination to kill her. In the next instant, I overpower her and guide her hand to press the syringe into her jugular and depress the poison.

Seconds later, euphoria envelops me, and a smile graces my lips in satisfaction when I witness her eyes go blank, body falling completely limp. When I release my hold on her and retreat a step, she drops to the floor.

I drag in deep breaths, savoring the moment. Only one more person to eliminate now. Before I can turn around and charge for the connecting door, a familiar male speaks.

“Well done, Eleanor.”

DANIEL

“That’s it?” I stare at him like he’s lost his fucking mind. Right now, I think he has. “I’m just goin’ in there myself?”

Jesus. It’s not enough that he did something to my car—and to me—to get us unpaused after Mac stopped time. I can’t even wrap my goddamn mind around any of it.

“I’ll leave your car back at her place.”

I let out a grunt of disbelief. “Assumin’ I’ll make it back.”

“I suppose that is an assumption.”

“Thanks for your vote of confidence.” Sarcasm bleeds from my words as I slide out of my Chevelle. He does the same, coming around to get in on the driver’s side.

“Good luck, Mr. Madrano.” He speaks with the usual lack of inflection. “You’ll need it.”

I cut him a sharp look before forcing one foot in front of the other, heading toward the building with the small sign on the front.

Before I approach where the security guard stands statue-like at the door, I withdraw my gun and flick off the safety.

By the way I force the muscles in my arms and legs to relax and be less rigid with alarm, my instincts have a clear idea of what I’m walking into.

Nothing good, that’s sure as fuck.

Mac’s face flashes behind my eyes, her tortured expression and the words I’m not sure she meant for me to hear. I love you.

Pin-drop silence greets me when I enter the dark building. A skinny flashlight lies on the floor, shining a path of light directly at a dead body. I grab the light and use it to illuminate my surroundings.

Holy fucking shit.

At the sight of the body’s wounds, every single part of me goes on high alert. Nobody just shoots for the groin unless it’s personal.

Anger coils through me. Everything in me tells me he deserved it. “The fuck did you do to my woman?” I mutter.

Hesitation blankets me, because I need to search for her, but this motherfucker… I step closer to his body and fire off another shot at his groin for good measure. With a final glare at the piece of shit, I force myself to continue through the building.

I nearly lose my damn mind after checking so many rooms along the corridor and finding them empty. Where the hell is she? Frustration edges in, with desperation nipping at its goddamn heels.
