“I am?” My voice squeaks and I clear my throat, feeling foolish.

“You are,” Linda says firmly. “He’s here. I can feel his energy too. Something monumental is going to happen tonight.”

I swallow hard at her words.

“I can feel it.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

Rhett

I can take staring at Willow in that dress for only so long before I give in to my every urge and need and finally approach her. She’s kept her distance the entire afternoon as if she knows how much she’s torturing me and I can’t stand it any longer.

She’s on the other side of the pool, standing by the balcony that overlooks the expansive gardens below and the ocean just beyond the green. She was just talking to an older woman who scooped her up in a hug before walking away. Meaning, she’s all alone.

It’s my chance to swoop in.

I approach her from behind, taking in how the dress exposes the smooth expanse of her back. How the dress sits low at the base of her spine—if it dipped any lower, I could probably see her ass crack. She looks as sweet and as innocent as sunshine with her hair flowing down her back, the front pieces pulled into a creamcolored silky bow, and matching cream, heeled sandals on her feet, which make her a little taller.

Easier to kiss maybe.

All the girls went nuts over the lady reading their kiss prints. At one point the fortune teller tried to get us to do it too, but we all refused. I’m not going to put on lipstick and kiss a piece of paper for her to tell me some bullshit about my personality or future. No thank you. That lady looked right at me when she was talking to us, pointing at me with her index finger.

“The love of your life is here tonight,” she told me. That’s all she said.

Brooks had slapped my chest. “What was that about?”

I had no idea.

Is this girl I’m sneaking up on the love of my life? Sounds dramatic. And maybe it’s some bullshit, but I don’t know.

We’re gonna find out.

“Whatcha doing out here all alone?” I ask her.

Willow startles and turns to face me, her wide eyes meeting mine. “Oh. Hi.” She rests her hand on her chest, her palm pressing against her cleavage. “You scared me.”

“Sorry.” I slip my hands into my pockets so I don’t reach for her. I’m still supposed to be mad at her, but the anger has waned as the day has gone on.

“I was talking to my grandma. She was leaving.”

“Where’s your mom and dad?” I haven’t spotted them yet, but there are a lot of people here.

“They couldn’t make it.” Her smile is small, her gaze unsure. “Are you having fun?”

“It’s all right.” I shrug. “For a kids’ party.”

“If my cousins heard you, they’d be devastated. Paris and Pru are feeling very grown-up,” Willow says.

“You’re looking pretty grown-up in that dress.” Okay, that sounded lame.

“Oh.” She glances down at herself before lifting her head to meet my gaze again. “It’s kind of scandalous.”

“I like it.”

“You don’t think it’s too much?”

I slowly shake my head. “You look amazing.”
