“She and her husband were in the foyer when I came downstairs tonight. Maybe we were wrong about Randall.”

“It’s possible.” Sloane rubs her forearm, causing the bracelets on her wrists to clink together. “He and Tricia arrived around 6:30 p.m.”

“That wouldn’t have given him much time.” Cade runs a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end.

“Did you make an appointment to meet him?” Ripley asks.

“Tomorrow at two o’clock.” Cade looks at his wristwatch. “Even if he’s not involved in the burglaries, his investment business seems too good to be true.”

“If you go through with the meeting, let us know. We’ll provide backup.”

“I think it’s worth looking into. I’ll phone Truman in the morning and get his input.”

I smile at him. To go from the man who told me I need to stay inside and not play the game, he’s come a long way.

“Don’t get all cocky. I’ll be with you.”

“Of course.” My smile grows wider. This is what it feels like to be in a partnership. I wasn’t expecting to share my plans with someone or look forward to working as a team, but I am. It’s the best of both worlds.

After they leave, I twist my foot in a circle. “I’ve got to get out of this dress, and these shoes are killing my feet.”

“Now, that’s something I think I can assist you with.” He walks beside me to the stairs. I quiver at the deep growl in his voice and the images that flicker through my mind.

When I glance over my shoulder, his predatory gaze sets my body on fire. It would have been my panties if he hadn’t shredded them. This time I’m not going to stop until I’ve touched every inch of his tantalizing body. “My room is at the end of the hall. We should probably wait until everyone settles in for the evening.” I arch an eyebrow. “Unless you want people to know what we’re up to.”

“Don’t worry about that. Remember, I told you earlier, the staff think we’re having a steamy clandestine affair, which by the way, was inspired thinking on my part.” He bites his bottom lip and waggles his eyebrows. “We have adjoining rooms.”

“Inspired or arrogant?” I feign irritation as adrenaline races through my body. If any other man were so highhanded in his attempt to get me into bed, I’d have put a stop to it. However, with Cade, if I don’t have him in my room and in my bed within the next ten minutes, I’m going to jump him on the staircase. I’m sure the remaining guests would not approve.

“How about we settle for desperate?”

“Hmmm. That works. I’ll get the connecting door.” I rush up the stairs without waiting for his reply. He’ll be on the other side waiting when I unfasten the lock.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Cade

I secure my Glock 9 MM into the vault gun case. Ripley had both in a locker for me to pick up when I flew into the airport. After locking the case, I shrug out of my jacket and fling it onto the dresser while securing the exterior door.

As I stride across the floor to our adjoining door, I grasp my tie and tug at it, flinging it on the chair. It slides off the cushion and slips onto the floor.

For once, I don’t care that I’m leaving shit lying around. The snap of the deadbolt releasing has my cock throbbing in anticipation. I need my hands all over her at once. Ever since we were in the storage closet, I haven’t been able to get her scent out of my head. The choice to wear too-tight pants was a bad decision.

The second the last barrier between us opens, my eyes drink her in, permanently imprinting her likeness into my brain. She’s the most stunning woman I’ve ever met. I never want to forget the sight of her in stocking feet with her hair brushing along her shoulders while silhouetted by moonlight. No matter what happens in the future, I’m going to cherish this night. But I’ll drop down to my knees and beg for more.

She licks her lips. “I took off my shoes but left the dress for you.”

I shove the door shut and pull her into my arms. “Thank you. As much as I want to see you out of it, I would hate to miss the opportunity to remove it inch by inch.”

She throws her arms around my neck and stands on her tiptoes to meet my mouth. This has been the longest night of my life–walking behind her while watching the fabric of her dress slide over her flawless ass nearly killed me. I have a new respect for bodyguards who are hired to protect gorgeous women. If they have a fraction of the sexual chemistry we have, they’re destined to end up in bed together.

I inhale to catch a hint of her perfume, sucking it down. The scent invades my brain and coils through my pores. Perfection. I dip my tongue between her lips and hold her flush against my body. It’s not enough. She moans with approval and grinds her sex against my straining erection. Just when I thought I couldn’t get any harder, she proved me wrong. How in the hell am I going to get this zipper undone? It feels like I’m going to bust the thing open.

I’ve never wanted a woman more than I want her. She’s smart, funny, and has a heart big enough to care about everyone she meets. She makes me feel things I haven’t felt since my injury. Actually, I feel some things I’ve never felt before. I want to spend the rest of my life with her by my side.

She stands back and unfastens the top button of my shirt. “I think you have on too many clothes.”

This is the first time I’ve been with anyone where my injuries will be visible. The first two times we were intimate, I made sure she didn’t see my back or touch where my scars were. I’m putting all my trust in her, opening myself up to her censorship.
