"Look, I have broken no laws, and I'm not going to set off any alarms. Besides, it's not me who's looking. Lance is better with the firewalls anyway."

Fuck, would I never be free of this fucker? "Shit, you called Lakewood?"

"I didn't tell him anything that he could use to figure out why I was asking. I just said that someone had been murdered in Montauk and I was looking for security footage of the incident."

"You didn't tell him about my mother?"

“No, of course not.”

I wasn't used to trusting anyone. The idea that I could trust Gwen to not share my mother's secret was a new feeling.

"You really didn't tell him?"

"No. I would never do that. I just needed help getting in a firewall, and that's his skillset."

I let out a sigh of relief. "Okay. Did he find anything?"

"No, not yet. But he's looking."

"Gwen, I don't want you anywhere near this. Please, just let me handle it."

"I'm sorry, but I can't do that."

I frowned at her. "What?"

"Look, I can maybe see, maybe, why you pushed me away two months ago. And I can see how my impulsive nature leads to you worrying. I can also see how, for my own good, you don't want me anywhere near this."

"Thank you." Finally some sense.

"However—"

"Jesus."

"I'm in this now. You and me. What happens to you happens to me. And I can't just be a bystander anymore. My whole life, I’ve stood back and just allowed things to happen. I want to help. I want to do something and not just react."

"I get that, but Gwen, you can't?—"

"I hear what you're saying, however, I know what I'm doing and I want to help. We're family. I'm not going to let things just happen to me and my family anymore. I need to do something. I'll go crazy if I don't."

I stared at her."Look, I understand what you’re saying, but you can't do this. You’re not a spy. You can’t just start unearthing stones or run in half-cocked. You need someone watching your back."

"Which is why I'm telling you."

"You thought about not telling me?"

"Actually, no. I didn't think about not telling you. However, if you'd reacted poorly, then maybe I wouldn't have told you anything else."

"Gwenyth!"

"Every time you say my name like that, it makes me hot," she said with a lascivious grin.

My dick twitched like a traitor. "Jesus."

"Oh, relax, Atticus. All I did was look for some information."

"And have you thought that maybe my father has people checking to see if anyone is looking into anything?"

"Yes, I considered that. Which is why I had Lance do the poking around."
