“I found this out only a week ago. I was trying to figure out the best time to drop the L-bomb.”

“You mean Lance or Lizard?”

She laughed back. “One and the same. But honestly, with college apps, SATs, and the girls’ basketball team on fire, I didn’t want to distract you.”

“Thanks.” I loved my tell-it-like-it-is best friend and appreciated her discretion. Yeah, if I’d found out that the douchebag was cheating on me earlier, I may have fallen apart. Or done something rash.

She ran a hand through her slicked-back hair. “I’m so sorry you had to find out this way.”

“It’s okay.”

“Hey, if the situation were reversed, would you have told me?”

I had to think about it. “Probably not.”

She gave me the stink-eye. “You’d better! I don’t want some two-timing a-hole in my bed.”

She made me laugh again. “Okay, I promise.” A beat. “Will you be coming home for Thanksgiving?”

“No. My mom and I don’t want to spend the money, but I’ll be home a few weeks later for almost a month at Christmas.”

“Guess what! I’ll be up in San Fran spending Thanksgiving with my grandparents as usual. I can take the BART to visit you at Berkeley.”

“Awesome! You can even stay with me if you want; my roommate’s going home and won’t be around.”

I was feeling better by the second. Not only could I spend time with my grandma, but I could also see my best friend. I had something to look forward to.

Jordan sighed. “Sweetpea, I gotta go. I have a twenty-page paper that’s due tomorrow.”

“Thanks, Fly, for being here for me. I feel a whole lot better.”

“Trust me, Lance is a minus ten on the boyfriend scale. He doesn’t deserve someone as amazing as you. It’s so not worth shedding tears over that asshole.”

“Lancehole!” I corrected.

Fly laughed her hearty laugh. “Trust me, Lancehole will get his.”

Fly also believed in karma.

Like Mary Burton’s husband. What goes around, comes around.

We blew each other kisses and said goodbye.

Sleep awaited me.

And hopefully sweet dreams.

Or dreams of killing the traitor and Tanya.

THIRTY

NATALIE

Another Monday. I woke up feeling great. I’d slept well, and the happiness I’d given our exchange student by throwing her a surprise birthday party last night was still tingling on my skin. As I drove into Beverly Hills for my weekly blowout, I thought about her ecstatic expression as she entered the backyard. It was worth a million bucks. I felt blessed I could give her so much joy when she’d done the same for me.

The only damper to this morning had been Paige. She woke up feeling ill with bad period cramps, and asked if she could stay home. Of course, I said yes. She hardly missed a day of school. Sparing Matt the time-consuming drive, Lance came by and picked up Tanya and Will.

I found it odd Lance didn’t ask about Paige and even odder that last night at the party he didn’t hang out with her for one minute. For a while I saw him chatting away with Tanya, then they both disappeared. I had a nagging feeling something was going on. I needed to have a talk with Paige. Get to the bottom of this, maybe later today.
