“How is Cliff? Did he ever marry?”

“He’s doing a lot better, I guess. He doesn’t date much. When he does, he can only find all the ways she’s not Pook.

“There was one time I thought there was someone, but nothing came of it. They never stand a chance. He’s married to the ranch. Daddy did the right thing handing it over to him.”

“Do you regret not taking over?”

“Not really. I help out a lot. Ann does the books. Brad helps when he’s around and has taken over a lot of the business stuff. We’re doing what feels right and what’s best for the place.”

“It must be nice to be able to share the load.”

“Darlin’, have you opened the books? You don’t have to do this alone. I told you, I’m here to help,” he says with concern in his eyes.

“I’m exhausted. I’ll start fresh tomorrow. I’m right where I want to be tonight.”

He bends awkwardly to kiss me as I look up at him. We fall silence for a bit as he sips at his hot chocolate. I’m nearly drifting off when he moans, grabbing my attention.

“Oh my God, you have to try this. We nailed them. This tastes just like yours.”

I sit up as he holds the cupcake out for me to bite. I take it into my mouth and moan as it melts on my tongue. Covering my mouth, I lift a brow at him.

“I know you’re not taking credit for that baby’s work,” I tease.

“I helped,” he says with a sulking expression.

“I’ll have to see it to believe it. These taste nothing like those cement cakes you made in Italy.”

He picks up the other cupcake and drags it across my chest. I look back at him in shock. He laughs and reaches to tug me onto my back.

“Trev,” I squeal as he hovers over me to lick and suck the icing off. I lace my fingers in his hair as I wiggle and pant beneath him.

He peels the thin straps of my satin night shirt down, kissing, licking, and sucking his way across my skin. His hot mouth is a seduction all in itself. I know we did a ton of fucking in his truck earlier, but my pussy pulses for him all over again.

“I love you,” he groans in my ear.

“I love you too.”

It’s clear in his eyes that we’re going to spend the night making love. With each touch, I feel safe, cherished, and loved. It’s like he’s trying to fix the past with each caress.

CHAPTER 26

Open the Books

Lynn

“Miss Cakes, would you like some pancakes and bacon?” Snacks asks as I walk into the kitchen.

“Do you always make breakfast for everyone?”

“Most of the time. Scoot and Bam will eat mine if I don’t. Somebody has to feed these folks. Daddy and Jess will fix their own, but they work so hard. I like to help when I can.”

I smile. She looks so cute in her little apron, moving about as if this is her own kitchen. I think I like that she’s made herself at home in my kitchen.

“Thank you, honey. I’ll have whatever you’re making, but I need some coffee.”

“I’ll make you a cup and we can go sit on the porch,” Trevor says as he comes up behind me. I turn to find him in a T-shirt and basketball shorts. He’s sweaty, and his shirt is sticking to his skin.

I can’t for the life of me understand how he got up this morning and still had legs to go for a run. I groaned and threw a pillow at him when he tried to wake me to join him. The man is insatiable and spent the night ravishing my body.

“Good run?”

“Would have been better with you by my side, but it was decent. You just getting up?”

“Someone tried to wake me with the roosters, so I’ve been up for a while now,” I say.

“You said you run in the mornings. I thought we could start a routine together. I get up the same time every morning no matter what.”

“I’ll keep that in mind. I’ll be on the swing waiting on that coffee. Thanks.”

I go out to the porch and sit on one of the huge porch swings, tucking my legs beneath me. Turning my face up to the sun, I inhale. It smells like warmth, grass, and the morning sun.

I miss this. New York is so busy and filled with buildings. I don’t get to Nashville nearly enough to have this type of vibe. Not that I have a place like this there. This right here is something unique to being home.

“Here you go, darlin’,” Trevor says as he walks out with a cup of coffee and a plate of breakfast.

I take both, balancing the plate on my lap. My first sip of coffee is like heaven. Trev takes a seat beside me and leans to kiss my temple.
