“Kind of.”

“So, what are we going to do about it?”

“What do you mean? There’s nothing to do. I helped found this club. I have to set an example.”

“Or… you let me take over.”

Letting anyone take over the MC outright, even Outlaw, is insanity. The work we do has only gotten harder, and it’s more than any one man should have to deal with.

“You work in the background, from home. You can orchestrate hunts, help me with the guys, and keep us right by the townsfolk. You’d still get a cut of the take, and you get to be with the family all the time.”

I’ve trusted Outlaw forever. He’s practically my brother. We grew up together in the same low-income housing, we worked in factories together for years, and we buddied up together to start the MC and the bounty business. There isn’t a man on Earth I can better think to take this role, but the thought of anyone having that much control sits awkwardly with me.

“You sure you want all that on your shoulders? The guys are a pain in the ass sometimes.”

“I’ve been handling it.”

“What are you guys working on right now?”

He tugs his phone out of his chest pocket and scrolls through some photos, stopping when he reaches one with the picture of a woman attached. She’s a tall blonde, curved waist, dark brown eyes, and delicate features. “This woman has robbed three banks between Montana and Wyoming. There are highway cameras that show her coming in this direction.”

“Hey,” Collette steps out onto the porch, “I was just passing by. Can I see that photo closer?” She takes Outlaw’s phone and studies the photo on the screen. “I know that girl.”

“What?” I stand beside her. “How?”

“I haven’t seen her in a while. I even went looking for her before I moved up here with you. I wanted to say goodbye, but she was gone.”

“Wait,” wood boards bend and creak as Outlaw moves toward us, “you’ve talked to her?”

“Yeah, pretty sure. I wouldn’t forget her face. She’s really pretty, soft and gentle looking. Why do you have a picture of her?”

“She robbed two banks across two states, and we think she’s hiding up here.”

Collette drags in a deep breath. “What? No.” She laughs. “You’ve got the wrong girl. She’s so young you’d think she was in college. Hell, she told me she’s never even been touched by a man before.”

“Virgins rob banks too,” Outlaw groans, taking his phone back. “What else did she tell you? What did she talk about?”

“Nothing. She was really tight lipped. She just… well… I complained a lot about being tired and she listened. I also told her how hot the sex was with Max back in—”

“Okay.” Outlaw swipes his hand down over his beard. “Anything she say to you that could be useful?”

“Not really. She liked cooking. She was always bringing me stuff, and she didn’t have a lot of life experience. That’s all I know.”

“Did you tell her Max was a bounty hunter?”

Collette’s eyes go wide. “Yeah, I did. Come to think of it… that’s when she got really weird and left. She said she’d left her stove on. I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but now I guess that’s pretty weird. I’m sorry. I would’ve said something if I—”

“Not your fault, baby. We’re good. Hey, while you’re here, what do you think of Outlaw stepping in for me with the MC.”

She narrows her brows. “What? Like… you giving it up?”

“No, I’d skip out on the hunting, but I’d run things logistically from here. It would give you more time to go back to school like you wanted and I could pick up extra time with Maddy while you’re studying.”

Her eyes brighten like I knew they would. “Look, you don’t have to ask me if I’m okay with you being out of harm’s way. I am.”

I lean into her lips and kiss them softly before turning back toward Outlaw. “It’s a deal. We’ll hold a meeting this weekend and let everyone know.”

Outlaw nods and hugs Collette before hopping down off the porch. “You remember anything else about what that girl told you, call me right away.”
