“Seriously?” Stella’s eyes widened. “Financial woes?”

“Yep. Big ones.” I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into me. “Now, let’s go wake our son up and play with him.”

“If we wake him up, he’s going to want to eat,” she said, running her fingers through my hair.

“Better yet.” A smile crossed my lips. “There’s nothing more beautiful than watching you breastfeed our son.” I leaned in and kissed her.

A heaviness settled in my chest as I stood before the headstones of my mother and father. Kneeling, I set a bouquet of flowers on my father’s grave, then my mother’s. This was the first time I’d been to the cemetery since her death.

“I hated you for what you did,” I said as I stared at her name etched into the headstone. “But I’m happy you did it. I would never have met Stella and wouldn’t have a beautiful baby boy. The scars of my past will always be there, but they will no longer define who I am. I will always be there for my son, no matter how busy I am. If he chooses to play sports, I will attend every single game, cheering him on. I will be there for him when he needs help with his homework. When he gets hurt, I’ll be there to take away his pain. I’ll make sure he feels the love I have for him, and I won’t let a day go by where I don’t tell my son that I love him. He will know what love is. Goodbye, Mom. Goodbye, Dad.” I stood up, tucked my hands into my pants pockets, and headed to the car.

“Are you okay, Miles?” Sean asked, staring at me through the rearview mirror.

“I’ve never been better.” I smiled.

CHAPTER 34

SIX MONTHS LATER

Stella

“Who is the most handsome boy in the world.” I smiled, holding Ben up in the air.

“I thought I was,” Miles said, pulling one of his ties from the closet.

“You’re the sexiest man in the world.” I smiled, and suddenly, a wave of nausea hit me.

I sat down on the edge of the bed, holding Ben on my lap.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” I waited for the nausea to pass. “Can you take the baby for a minute?”

“Of course.” He walked over and took Ben from me. “Are you sure you’re okay?” His brows furrowed.

Placing my hand over my mouth, I jumped up from the bed and ran into the bathroom. Miles followed and stood in the doorway. When I was finished, I grabbed a tissue and wiped my mouth. Standing up, I turned and faced my husband, holding our six-month-old son.

“Stella, are you?—”

I slowly shook my head. “No. I can’t be. It’s probably the food we ate last night.” I left the bathroom and sat on the edge of the bed.

“We both ate the same thing.”

“Why do you assume I’m pregnant because I threw up?”

He glanced at his watch. “It’s about that time.” A smirk crossed his lips. “Let’s see. If my calculations are correct, our children would be fourteen months apart.”

“You—you stop it right now.” I pointed at him as I stood from the bed and walked out of the room, hearing him chuckle.

Walking into the kitchen, I said good morning to Dora and made a cup of coffee.

“I hope that’s decaf,” Miles said, handing Ben over to Dora.

“What’s going on?” Dora asked.

“Stella is pregnant.” Miles smiled.
