“They are, boss.”

“And the food?”

“Everything is all set up. They’re waiting on you.”

“Thank you.” I smiled as I stood and buttoned my suitcoat.

I walked down to the conference room and stepped through the double doors. Standing at the head of the table, I stared at each of them—my friends.

“Shaun Kind, Sebastian Bennett, Harrison Grant, Jack Sutton, Colin Black, Asher Remington, Grayson Rhodes, Drew Westbrook, Max Hamilton, Oliver Wyatt, and Liam Wyatt. Welcome to Bradshaw Capital.” A wide grin crossed my face. “The board members are waiting upstairs. If you follow me, we can get this over with and then celebrate with food and alcohol.”

“Let’s do it.” Shaun grinned.

We went upstairs to the boardroom. When I opened the door, all eleven members stared at us as we walked in.

“What is going on here, Miles?” Peter asked.

“I called this emergency board meeting to let you all know that,” I cleared my throat, “your services on this board and at Bradshaw Capital are no longer needed.”

“Excuse me? You can’t do that,” Dominic, one of the other members, said.

“It’s obvious you didn’t read the company’s bylaws that my mother and father wrote when they started this company. A board member may be removed without cause. You all know that if you crossed either one of them, you were gone. To be honest, I’m surprised they even kept you on as long as they did. I own fifty-one percent controlling interest in this company, which gives me the right to remove all of you. Bradshaw Capital is going in a new direction, which requires fresh, new blood on the board. Hence, these fine gentlemen.” I held out my hand. “They are the new shareholders of this company, and we have all voted to remove you. I want to thank you for your services and your dedication to Bradshaw Capital over the years.” I smiled.

“You’ll be hearing from my lawyer, Miles!” Peter’s tone was harsh as he pointed at me.

“Now, now, Peter.” Shaun wiggled his finger. “Don’t forget with whom you’re dealing with. Have you forgotten our history? Everything done here today is legal and iron-clad. But if you want to waste your time, go ahead. Just go relax on the golf course with your wife or your thirty-something mistress if you choose.”

“Fuck you, Kind.” Peter shook his head. “What about your uncle?” he asked me.

“My uncle has been taken care of. He and my aunt are set for life.”

“Your parents would be so disappointed in you, Miles.”

“And you know what, Peter? I hope they are.” I grinned. “Ta-ta.” I opened the door and gestured for each of the old board members to leave. “Now that it’s settled, let’s go eat and drink!”

Two Months Later

Stella

I’d finally received my master’s and received my acceptance letter into the doctorate program. It was important to Miles that we married before our son was born. I was happy he felt that way because I felt it, too, but wasn’t sure how we’d pull it off.

One Friday night, he booked us a room at the Plaza Hotel. He said that Saturday was our day of pampering and relaxing, and we’d return to the penthouse on Sunday. I couldn’t wait to have him all to myself. That night, we were walking hand in hand, and he led me to the hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

“Wow. This is gorgeous.” I smiled.

“It’s fit for a queen, which you are.” Miles smiled, taking my hand and pulling me into him for a dance in the middle of the room.

“What are you doing?” I laughed.

He snapped his fingers, and soft music began to play.

“Dancing with my future wife. What do you think? Shall we share our first dance as husband and wife here?”

“Here?” My brows raised.

“Yes. Do you love it, Stella? Can you envision our reception here, filled with all of our friends?”
