“Hi.” I smiled.

“Hey.” He stopped.

“You don’t have to stop. It sounds beautiful.” I walked over and sat on the bench next to him. “How long have you been home?”

“Not long.” He placed his hands on the keys and began playing a soft melody. “Did you find a dress?”

“Yeah, I did. I wanted to ask you something.”

“Okay. What is it?”

“My friend Morgan’s wedding is next weekend, and I was wondering if you’d like to be my date.”

“I appreciate the offer, but no. Weddings aren’t my thing.”

“Oh, come on, Miles. It’ll be fun.”

“I said no, Stella.” His tone was abrupt.

“Okay.” I stood up. “I have to get ready for dinner.” I walked down the stairs and to my room.

I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. I knew he made it clear that I would live my life and he would live his, but what the hell was the big deal about attending a wedding with me? I had to go to this stupid dinner with him and pretend to be his wife. This arrangement was going to be a lot harder than I thought it would be.

CHAPTER 14

Miles

It didn’t matter if I pulled this off or not. All I had to do was stay married for one year, and there wasn’t a damn thing my uncle could do.

When Stella emerged from her room, and I turned around, my heart beat faster as I stared at her beauty.

“You look beautiful.” I smiled.

“Thank you. I’m ready to go if you are.”

I placed my phone in my pocket, and we headed to where Sean awaited us with the car.

“I’m a little nervous.” She glanced at me.

“Don’t be,” I said, taking hold of her hand. “We got this.” The corners of my mouth lifted as I gave her a wink.

When we walked through the doors of Tavern on the Green, the hostess took us to the table where my aunt and uncle were waiting for us.

“Hello, Miles.” My Aunt Gabby stood and hugged me.

“Hello, Aunt Gabby.”

“Miles.” My Uncle Ben nodded, extending his hand. “I didn’t know you were bringing anyone with you.”

“Aunt Gabby. Uncle Ben. I’d like you to meet my wife, Stella.”

Immediately, his eyes diverted to our ring fingers.

“Excuse me?” He cocked his head. “Your wife?”

“Oh, dear, Miles. When did this happen?” My aunt asked with surprise.

“Yesterday. Stella, this is my Uncle Ben and Aunt Gabby.”
