Holy shit.

“Fuck, son, you can even hit.” Waylon puts his hand on his chin and wiggles it back and forth. “But it doesn’t change that you’re mine.”

A sheriff’s car pulls into the parking lot with the lights on but no sirens. Brooks steps out in full uniform. “Okay. Enough everyone.” He takes out his cuffs. “Waylon Knight, you can’t be intoxicated on school property. I’m taking you into the station.”

“What? Fucking Barney Fife, get your hands off me.”

Brooks puts the cuffs on Waylon. “Don’t make me add resisting arrest.”

“This is some small-town bullshit. It doesn’t matter, Gillian, he’s mine, and I’ll be back.”

Gillian inhales deeply and takes Clayton’s hand. Clayton shakes his other hand.

“Let’s get you an ice pack,” I say.

Surprisingly, he kisses his mom on the cheek. “I’ll be right back.”

“Okay.”

Laurel comes up to Gillian, putting her arm around her shoulders. Lottie and Romy join them. At least she has a group of people to support her if she won’t let me be there.

On the way into the locker room, I don’t say much because I’m sure this is hard on Clayton, and he’s not a fan of mine.

“Sorry,” he mumbles.

“Nothing to be sorry for. You’re not in trouble. Don’t worry.” I open the door to the locker room.

“I meant you wanted to hit him, right?”

I chuckle. “Yeah, but…”

“You wanted to impress Mom?”

I shake my head. “No. I wanted to hurt the fucker who hurt your mom.”

He stops for a second, holding the hand that threw the punch.

I get him an ice pack, and the team surrounds him, asking questions about what happened.

I head into my office and shut the door to calm myself because I really want to beat that shithead to a pulp. And I have no idea what’s going on in Gillian’s head now.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Ben

I knock on Gillian’s door. Her car is in the driveway, so I know she’s home. My hands shake, so I put them in my pockets.

She opens the door and doesn’t say anything, but she opened the door. That has to be a good sign.

“Can we talk?”

She nods and steps to the side.

“Is Clayton home?” I ask.

“No, he’s Mister Hot Shot since he punched his dad. Out with Kait.”

I give her a small smile and step into the house. “It was an impressive punch.”
