At that moment, a sudden gust of wind grabbed the snow and swirled it, nearly making the oncoming Sherrif’s car vanish. All she could see as it passed were its headlights. Once it was around the front corner of the boathouse, she rushed forward to the next corner of the building and watched the Sheriff’s car pass the driveway into the boathouse and pass right by her van. Relief hit her when it kept going. She’d never been so thankful in all her life that her van was white.

Once the Sheriff was out of sight, she crept towards her van, relieved to see the back bumper was covered with snow. She was sure he’d never seen the van, not the silver bumper, not the taillights. She was safe. But her client was dead. “Okay, I think I’m safe now. He drove past me and must not have seen me.”

“Stay on the line with me,” Roth said.

“I’m here,” she assured him. While keeping her gaze in the direction the Sheriff had driven, she got into the driver’s seat of her van. “I think I’m safe,” she repeated. “I’m going to wait about fifteen minutes before I go. I have to go in the same direction he did, as this is a dead-end road I’m on.”

Roth sensed she was about to hang up. “Briana, wait. Stay on the line with me as you drive out of there. And give me some background on who this guy is. I can have my team do some digging for you. What did you see that makes you believe he killed his wife?”

“He dropped her lifeless body into the ice-cold lake, and she sank,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone of voice.

“Just now? And you just witnessed this?” Roth asked.

“Yes, and don’t you dare ask me if I’m sure that’s what I saw.”

“I’d never insult you by asking you that,” Roth said. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, why wouldn’t I be?”

“It’s not every day you see someone killed like that,” Roth said, his voice soft and consoling.

“No, thank God it’s not. But thank you, Sebastian, for caring about how it affected me.”

“I do care, Briana,” he said, even though he knew the call was being recorded. “I can help you if you let me. He has to be charged with his wife’s murder.”

“Yes, and I do need help for that. I can’t very well walk into his police station and accuse him of murder.”

“The State Police or FBI are where that report needs to be made,” Roth said.

“I’m not sure they’ll believe me, and I don’t want to explain my business to them. Can you help me, Sebastian?”

“My boss will have to approve my involvement. And I’ll have to check to see where the nearest airport is and, of course, weather could be a factor. But first, we need to make sure you’re safe,” Roth said.

“Thank you, Sebastian,” she said. “I assume your people are recording this call by now.”

Roth chuckled. “Yes. So go ahead and give me all the info on the client and the husband and we’ll start digging into them. My boss will need the info to sanction us working this mission and the expense of a flight out there.”

“Do you think he’ll allow you to help me?”

“Most likely. He has a thing about going after law enforcement who commits crimes.”

“Where are you right now?” Briana asked, hoping it was nearby.

“Indiana.”

“If I can get on the interstate, I’ll point my van south. I’m sure I’ll be okay. We could meet in Portland. I’m sure you could catch a flight into the airport there.”

“Portland, Maine, yes, that should be doable,” Roth said.

“Okay, thank you.”

She sat behind the wheel of her van, her gaze focused on the road in the direction the Sheriff had traveled for twenty minutes talking with Sebastian before she decided it was safe to follow. She’d drive to the interstate and point her van south. Hopefully, the snow would lighten up and the roads would be sufficiently plowed so that she could make it to Portland.

“I’m going to try to drive out of here now,” she said.

“Stay with me until you get on the interstate, okay?” Roth said.

“Cell service is spotty out here. If the call drops, I’ll call you back when I have service.”
