He had a plan now: he wasn’t going to be made a fool of anymore. And while he was at it, he wasn’t going to lose his boyfriend to some fucking sunshine rookie.

“You should invite Finn for dinner again, before the Freo game,” Joq said casually when he and George were watching TV later that week.

“Yeah?” George asked, turning to face him. “You think that’s a good idea?”

“Why not? I mean, it was awkward, with the pool,” he shrugged, feigning indifference. “Be nice to show him we’re cool, you know.”

“I dunno…”

“Come on, it’s just fucking between you two, right?” Again, just be casual, Joq reminded himself, be cool.

George cleared his throat. “Yeah, course.”

“And a bit of a crush,” Joq really hammed up the easy-going enthusiasm on that line. It was not a fucking crush. No fucking way. The denial had fallen and he was mad. Really fucking mad.

George blushed.

“What about Thursday?”

George was shaking his head; Joq anticipated it. He knew George had a late meeting.

“Finn can come here from training, hang out for a bit while you’re at the meeting,” Joq leaned forward and picked up his beer. “I really want to let him know it’s cool. I feel bad about, you know, giving him shit about PDAs in the pool.”

George was nodding, his eyes on the TV, unseeing.

“Yeah, alright. I’ll ask, but he might not be interested.”

“Why?”

And here we go, Joq thought. This was coming out one way or another.

“Come on, Joq. He’s a bit intimidated by you.”

“Me?”

“Yeah, he’s young, he’s gonna get over this, you know, puppy love or whatever,” George looked away, but he did not manage to hide how much it was cutting him up. Joq sympathised for a second. Then he wanted to pour his beer all over George’s head.

He gripped the bottle tightly and replied. “Yeah, this’ll probably help, if he sees it’s cool. No hard feelings.”

“I guess…”

“Cool.”

“I’ll ask.”

“That’s all I’m asking.”

“Okay,” George leaned forward and picked up the remote. “I can’t watch anymore of this shit.”

George loved this reality TV shit, so Joq knew he was looking for an out. He let him have it. He had a plan.

“Finn’ll be here around seven,” George said as he left for training Thursday morning.

“Cool,” Joq smiled. “And you’ll be done around eight?”

Joq did not expect Finn to still be here by then.
