We stare at each other, wearing goofy smiles until my eyelids grow heavy and his cock slips from my body.

Stone rolls away and takes me with him until I curl against his chest. We’re slick with sweat, and the night air makes everything cool. I pull a sheet over us and press a kiss over his heart, smiling at how quickly his breath evens out and sleep claims him.

Sleep doesn’t come as easily for me because, though that’s some of the best sex of my life, it didn’t resolve anything. I know without a doubt that I love him, but I’m not sure he doesn’t have a death wish that’ll take him away from me sooner rather than later.

Nothing has changed except every-fucking-thing.

Again.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Stone

I smile so fucking hard my cheeks hurt. I’m not sure what the fuck came over us last night, but holy fucking hell, do I hope it happens again.

Ivy absently pours cream into my coffee and slides the butter toward me while I scoop jam onto her toast. And the looks, good fucking God, the looks we’re sending each other are so hot they might burn the house down.

“Is this the jalapeño jelly we canned last year?” Ivy scoops another spoonful onto a second slice of toast.

“It is. How good is it?” Ma’s face is bright with pride.

“So fucking good,” Ivy groans, and she gives me an eye-roll. “Just a touch of fire.”

Fire is right!

“Thanks.” She slides another jar across the table, laughing when it stops right in front of Ivy. “So tell me, what’s this glow about? Are you two a thing, now, or just banging it out?”

“Ma,” I groan and shake my head.

“I have a right to know.”

“No, Ma, you don’t. I’m grown.”

The back door smacks open, and we all turn to see Dad’s thunderous expression. I have no doubt that it’s all about me and how I’ve fucked something up. Again.

“Dad.”

“Stone,” he growls like an actual fucking bear as he steps into the kitchen, making his way to me. “Rumor has it that some biker is roaming the streets of Opey, Two Pines and Tulip every night doing some dumb fuck shit that’s guaranteed to get him killed.”

I shrug. “I’m out doing what needs to be done.”

“Getting yourself killed? Is that what you want? Because that’s where you’re headed.”

I look back at Ivy, wondering if she snitched on me, but she raises both hands in a defensive posture.

“You knew about this shit?” Dad’s question is for Ivy.

She nods. “I did, and I told him the same thing.”

“That’s fucking right,” he shouts. “You keep going out there half-cocked? All you need is one lucky shot to end you.”

I know he’s right, dammit. “I can’t let anyone else get hurt in this beef that’s mine.”

“And mine,” Ivy adds, a thread of attitude in her voice.

Dad is shaking his head, damn near trembling with anger. “I know you didn’t learn this half-ass shit from Ace.”

“It’s my own dumb idea,” I assure him because Ace was a damn good mentor.
