‘Thank you,’ Matthew mouthed.

Winking back at him, Arien clicked on the first movie she came to.

Pulling a blanket over the two of them, Tanner draped his arm across her shoulders. She grabbed the bowl of popcorn from the end table beside her, placing it on his lap so they could share it. “Extra butter.”

“Just the way I like it.”

“I know.”

“What movie is this anyway?” he asked, shoveling popcorn in his mouth.

“The Invitation. Some horror flick. Mom and I both like them, so I figured that was a fair compromise since I vetoed the Harkles.” Arien quietly giggled. “I grew up watching scary movies. We’d have mommy-daughter dates camping out in the living room with Michael, Jason, and Freddy, while most of my friends were watching Jasmine, Belle, and Ariel.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, perk of having a young mom, I guess.” Reaching into the bowl on his lap, she glanced over at Jennifer, cuddling with her husband, and smiled. “They’re fun.”

Licking butter from his fingers, Tanner set the popcorn back on the table. He put a pillow behind him and sat back against the arm, pulling her back to his chest. Then he adjusted the blanket, raising it almost to their chins, and wrapped both arms around her. “You good?”

Arien looked again across the sofa. Her mother and stepfather were too preoccupied with the movie, and each other, to pay them any mind. “Yeah, I’m good.”

Underneath the blanket, his palm rested on her bare stomach. She pretended not to notice his fingertips lightly strumming her skin. Up and down, from the bottom of her bra to the waistband of her pants. Lazy circles around her belly button.

His cock grew hard beneath his sweats. It poked up against her ass. Arien pretended not to notice that either, but considering she was wiggling her way closer, Tanner was surely aware she knew.

His fingers delved into her sides, and raising his hips, he pressed himself into her. “I love how you’re always wearin’ these little cut-off shirts so I can feel your skin.”

She turned her head toward her mother.

“They’re asleep, pretty girl.”

“They could wake up,” she whispered. “My mom would die.”

“Nah. Your mama loves me.” With a kiss to her head, he nudged her. “C’mon, let’s leave ’em here. We can finish the movie in my room.”

Taking the bowl of popcorn with her, Arien followed him up the stairs.

In all fairness, he did turn the TV on.

Tanner fluffed a nest of pillows behind them and they snuggled together under the velvet comforter. His arm came around her, and pulling her closer, he kissed her hair. “Where were we?”

“Hmm, about fifty-nine minutes in,” she answered, pressing the fast-forward button. “They were about to do it, I think.”

“Do it?”

“Yeah, you know. Have hot vampire sex. See, our unsuspecting heroine doesn’t know it yet, but she’s an offering to that lord of the manor guy—who’s really Dracula, by the way. Her family set her up to be his bride in exchange for prosperity.”

“Three. The magic number.”

“You’ve seen this before?”

“We are at our strongest when we are three.”

The dialogue on the TV catching her off guard, she absently answered, “Whoa, uh, yeah.”

“No need to watch it again then.” Tanner put on a music channel and tossed the remote. “Now…” Scooping her into his arms, he rolled her on top of him. “…where were we?”

“Hmm, I dunno.”
