“We’ll put this on your account, young lady.”

“I don’t have an account.”

“You’re Matthew’s daughter, aren’t you?”

“Stepdaughter.”

“Then you have an account.”

After shopping, Matthew took them to lunch and it was the same thing. No check. They simply ate their food, and when they got up to leave, her stepfather just waved goodbye as he ushered them out the door.

She was overanalyzing again, wasn’t she? Yes, they did some things differently here, and so what? Maybe it wasn’t what she was accustomed to, but she’d get used to their ways eventually. Still, she couldn’t shake the notion that something was off here, she just couldn’t quite put her finger on what.

Arien pulled the covers off, and the dog, realizing she was awake, jumped into bed with her. “Did you have a nice snooze, Sunday?”

Or was this one Monday? Five border collies lived on the ranch. Each one named for a day of the week, with the exception of Thursday and Saturday. I wonder who came up with that? Before she could give him a scratch, his ears perked up. Jumping back down, he ran out the door. “Well, good morning to you, too.”

As much as Arien hadn’t wanted to get out of bed, after her shower she couldn’t wait to start the day. She loved all things pumpkin spice, so Thanksgiving was one of her favorite holidays. Since she’d be helping out in the kitchen, she dressed for comfort more than anything. Leggings and a cotton bralette trimmed with lace under an oversized pullover.

Slipping her feet into a pair of cute knit booties, the clamor of her stepbrothers returning from their chores could be heard from across the hall. Grabbing Tanner’s birthday present, she opened her bedroom door.

And Kellan hadn’t closed his.

Turn around, Arien.

But she couldn’t.

His back was to her. Frozen in place, she just stood there, slack-jawed, watching him push denim down his thighs, a gift bag for Tanner dangling in her fingers.

Kellan shucked off his jeans, kicking them to a chair. He wore nothing underneath. Sweet Jesus. He was beautiful. Stretching his arms over his head, he resembled a living, breathing statue. Rock hard, but at the same time, fluid.

Now, Arien. Turn the fuck around.

She didn’t, but he did.

Molten-chocolate eyes stared into hers, his gaze heavy-lidded and sultry. It was as if he knew all along she’d been watching him. Liked it even. Taking a step toward her, Kellan leaned against the doorframe. And still, she didn’t move.

Whatever you do, Arien, do not look down.

She looked.

He sniggered, gripping himself in his hand.

Mesmerized by the sight of it, Arien watched him fill.

Something pulled deep inside her belly. How would it feel to have Kellan inside her? God, why was she even wondering?

As if he could read her thoughts, his tongue swept across his bottom lip. Kellan smirked, and fisting his cock, he stepped away, heading for the shower.

Holy fucking hell, what’s wrong with me?

It took her a minute. Arien stood there, her gaze on the hallway door to the bathroom the boys shared, imagining what Kellan was doing in there. She inhaled deep and let it go, knocking at the door on the other side of it.

“Happy birthday,” she exclaimed, giving Tanner a hug. “I wanted to give you your present before I go downstairs to help Mom.”

He hugged her back, her feet lifting off the ground. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“I wanted to.” Smiling up at him, Arien put the shiny gift bag in his hand. “I’m sorry, it isn’t much.”
