“Chloe Nolan?”

She stood and feistily corrected her. “Kerrigan Nolan. No hyphen.” Then she turned to Katie. “You can come back with me. I don’t mind. Beats sitting here looking at old magazines.”

That’s how Chloe came to be sitting beside her, holding her hand, when it was her turn with Doctor Torres.

Tiny woman. Looked like she was no older than Katie.

“When was your last period?” she asked her, scribbling on a clipboard.

“Um, right before Christmas. I was visiting my parents.”

The doctor looked up with a furrowed brow. “Was it a normal period?”

“Uh, yeah, I guess.” Katie glanced over to Chloe, who shrugged.

“And your period before that one?”

She tried to think. Was it before Halloween? After? “I’m not sure. They’ve never been very regular.”

“Have you ever had unprotected sex?”

Fuck.

“Once.”

She felt Chloe squeeze her hand.

“And when was that?”

One time. Her first time. In the tent under the Christmas lights.

“The day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday.”

Katie squeezed her eyes closed. She felt the tears building behind her lids.

Doctor Torres patted her arm. “Your urine sample is positive for hCG, which tells me you’re pregnant.”

She opened her eyes and felt the tears escape down her temples. Chloe held her hand with both of hers. Katie looked to the little doctor. “Are you sure? It was my first time!”

“I’m sure, but we’re going to draw some blood and do an ultrasound to confirm it. Okay?”

The probe was cold and uncomfortable, but Katie held onto Chloe’s hand, her eyes on the black and white screen.

She heard the heartbeat.

She saw the tiny speck of life floating in the sea of her womb.

And she still didn’t believe it.

“What is it with you girls and Black Friday?” Katie didn’t get it. “That’s definitely when you conceived your little bean here, which gives you a due date of August twentieth.”

Chloe got a little bouncy in her chair. “Oh, I hope you have him on the twenty-fourth, then the baby can share a birthday with his uncle Jesse!”

I’m having a baby.

How was she ever going to tell Brendan? Would he be mad or glad? She wasn’t even sure how she felt. Katie thought he wanted kids one day, but they’d never really talked about having babies or…anything.

It wasn’t supposed to happen now.
