Chloe was standing there with a big grin on her face when he put her down. “You found one, yeah?”

“Yeah,” Brendan answered with a grin just as big. “You?”

“Two.” She giggled. “Taylor’s ace tree and Jesse’s taller, greener, fuller one.”

“I heard that.” Taylor put his arm around Chloe from the right and he kissed her.

Jesse linked his arm with Taylor’s behind her from the left. “Well, it’s true.” He kissed her too, then, and turned to his cousin. “Hey, we’re doing our carriage ride downtown to see the tree tomorrow—want to come?”

Brendan kissed the top of her head before he answered, “Thanks, Jess, but Katelyn and I already have plans. Maybe next year.”

We do?

He winked at her.

I guess we do.

The lot attendant wrapped up their trees and Brendan arranged to have them delivered along with fresh wreaths and boughs for the mantels. Chandan started to fuss so they said their goodbyes and headed in opposite directions on the avenue.

“Where are we going?” Katie asked.

“Shopping.”

“Oh.” Katie was not about to question shopping.

He took her to a quaint little gift shop on a side street off First Avenue. It was one of those stores filled with a colorful array of anything and everything you could imagine. A large decorated tree, filled with ornaments of all kinds, stood in the center. Brendan took her by the hand and led her to it.

“We need to pick out an ornament for our tree.”

She tilted her head toward his. “Just one?”

“Just one.” He winked. “You’ll see.”

They looked at angels and snowmen, candy canes and stars. Every ornament was exquisite and unique and artistically crafted. Then she came across a handmade little guy with filigree leaves for wings and an acorn hat. Katie tapped Brendan on the shoulder.

“Babe, is this a…”

“Faerie. It is.” An old woman with white hair approached them. “Hello, Brendan. I haven’t seen you in here since forever. How are ya?”

“Aggie!” Brendan hugged her, rocking from side to side. Her head barely reached the center of his chest. “I’m good. How are you?”

“Old.” She chuckled. “I’m fine, dear.”

“You’re beautiful, Aggie.” Brendan kissed her short white curls. “This is my girlfriend, Katelyn.”

The old lady turned to her then. “Hello, Katelyn.” Aggie pinched Brendan’s side. “Watch out for this one. He’s the dickens, I tell ya. Known him since he was no taller than my knee, and now look at him.” She chuckled with a shake of her head. “I’ll be up front when you’re ready.”

Katie watched the old lady make her way down the aisle. She still held the faerie with filigree wings in her hand.

“Is that the one?”

She didn’t think Dillon actually believed in faeries, and she didn’t either, but unexplained things happen every day, don’t they?

She nodded. “Yes.”

‘There’s no avoiding your destiny.’

Now that she believed.
