It was after five in the morning, probably closer to six, and after another tedious night at the club Brendan lay there awake in his bed. Since when did he think of a night behind the red door as tedious? Since it kept him from spending time with Katelyn, that’s when.

Yeah, he was fucked.

He hadn’t planned on taking her to his house that day they went to the zoo, but then he couldn’t have known just how much he wouldn’t want that day to end. How much he’d enjoy her company. Just being with her. Talking to her. Kissing her.

Katelyn stayed until midnight. He ordered groceries and they cooked chicken piccata for dinner together. She told him funny little stories about growing up in corn country, as she called it, and her younger brother. How everyone in her family had names that began with the letter K. Then she fell asleep against his shoulder during the Bears game.

And fuck if he didn’t like it.

But while Brendan was home all day, Katelyn was either at Beanie’s or on campus. He’d stop in for coffee to see her on his way to the club every day, of course. Steal her away for breakfast or lunch or a walk in Coventry Park. But every night spent in the plum-velvet booth felt like time wasted. Drinking with the guys and watching Dillon go through pussy like a kid in a candy store. Coming home to an empty house and a lonely bed.

Not today though.

It was Sunday.

And that meant two things.

The Red Door was closed and he’d get to spend the day with his sweet girl.

Brendan managed to get in a few hours of sleep. Katelyn was helping Kelly and someone he’d never seen before arrange pastries and cookies in the display case. As soon as she looked up and saw him, she came out from behind the counter with a smile on her face that could light up the entire fucking world. It lit up his anyway.

Fucked indeed.

“And who is this tall and mighty fine drink of water?”

The unfamiliar voice was deep. Sassy. Each word delivered with sharp precision.

Katelyn giggled at the man behind the counter. He had black Shirley Temple curls that went past his shoulders and wore a wide headband with a bow, red lipstick, and dangling earrings that sparkled with rhinestones. “Leo, meet Brendan.”

Leo?

“Ohh. Girl, now you didn’t tell me he looked like that.”

Katelyn stood high on her tiptoes and pecked Brendan on the cheek. “Bren, this is Leonardo Hill. Our new baker.”

The flamboyant man fanned himself like it was a scorching summer day, never mind that it was close to freezing outside. “And assistant manager, thank you.”

“That too.” She grinned as she grabbed her coat. “Bye, Kell.”

Kelly pulled her head out of the display case. “Bye, sweetie. Don’t have too much fun now. You hear me?”

And laughing, Katelyn dragged him out of the shop.

Brendan looked back at the door, shaking his head. “Who was that?”

“Leo? Kelly hired him to replace Stacy. Isn’t he awesome? I just love him!”

“Fabulous.” He chuckled. “And what did Kelly mean? Don’t have too much fun.”

“Sex,” she answered so matter-of-factly he raised his brow. “I think she imagines us in your red room or something.”

“I don’t have a red room.” He grinned.

Not in the house anyway, but if Katelyn ever wanted to play, and perhaps one day she would…well, the club sat empty all day.

“You don’t?”

“Did you see a red room?”
