Monica grinned. “Oh, I see.”

“Trust me, you don’t.” He shook his head.

She’s barely eighteen, barely been touched, and I already fucked it all up.

He was too ashamed of himself to admit any of that, though.

“Brendan, trust me when I say, you know how to love, and better than most. You love everyone in this room…”

He looked into her warm eyes with a smile. “You’re all family. That’s different.”

“Is it? Love is love, no matter what form it takes.” Monica tilted her head and pursed her lips. “I think you’ve got love and fucking mixed up, brother.”

Brendan raised a brow.

“You have a gigantic heart and there isn’t a person here that doesn’t know firsthand how fiercely you love. And yes, you know how to fuck like the devil too, Mister.” She winked. “So, what I think you’re really saying is you’re not sure how you fuck a woman you’re in love with…because you’ve never done it. Am I right?”

He hadn’t. “Maybe.”

Monica turned in his embrace, her hands on his biceps. “Saying ‘I love you’ with your body is one of the most beautiful experiences there is in life, you sweet man. I’d hate for you to miss out on it.”

“I’m not sweet.” He smirked.

“To the people you love, you are.”

Brendan felt heat bloom in his face, and that almost never happened.

Monica glanced over at Linnea and her brother who were talking with Dillon. “Kodiak looks good, doesn’t he?”

He grunted with a nod.

She placed her hand on his forearm and smiled. “Now tell me all about this certain someone you’re in love with.”

“Did I say I’m in love with her?”

Monica grinned. “You just did.”

Thirty minutes before closing time. She thrummed her nails on the counter. Beanie’s was empty. After this afternoon, the only thing Katie looked forward to was crawling into bed and going to sleep. Kelly came around the counter from the back and planted herself there.

“Now that we’re the only ones here, you wanna tell me what’s going on with you and Brendan? And don’t tell me nothing…”

Here we go.

“…because I’m not blind. That was something. And you come back from break with sad crying eyes and he takes off…”

Fuck it.

“Take a breath, Kelly.” She sighed. “If it was something it isn’t anymore, okay?”

“What happened, KK?” Kelly tilted her head, brows drawn in apparent confusion. “I mean you don’t even know the guy.”

“Yes, I do,” she finally admitted. “I met him a few months ago at the summer festival.”

Katie recounted that magical Midsummer’s Eve night when she ran into him on the path in the park. Their kiss. The butterflies she felt every time she saw him.

“Oh.”

“And I thought…well, it doesn’t matter now what I thought.”
