He’d taken the day off from working at the office and she had the day off from Beanie’s. Katelyn didn’t need to work at all, and honestly, Brendan didn’t want her to. Especially with Kelly. She was still frosty and he hadn’t quite forgiven her yet. But it was Katelyn’s decision, and she loved Beanie’s. Besides, it was only a few days a week and she’d be home once their little bean arrived.

“We’re going car shopping.”

“Why?” She glanced at him from where she rested her chin on his sternum.

“We can’t strap a baby to the back of the ’Vette, now can we?” he said with a smirk.

Her eyes widened and she lifted her head off his chest. “You can’t get rid of the ’Vette. You love that car.”

Got it on my sixteenth birthday, seventeen years ago today.

“Did I say I’m getting rid of it? Hell, no.” Brendan wrapped his arms around her. “The new car is for you.”

Semantics. Since, technically, he’d be driving it too.

“Me?” Her jaw dropped. “Do I get to pick?”

“Of course.” He grinned because she was so happy. “You can even choose the color.”

Brendan saw the wheels turning, a dreamy look on her face.

“Oh, I always wanted a Dodge Challenger—it’s my dream car!”

He chuckled. “Sorry, sweetheart. That isn’t very baby friendly.”

“But you said I could choose.” She stuck out her lip in a pout. So fucking cute.

“You can.” He smacked a kiss to her lips. “Beemer or Benz?”

Call him paranoid, but the safety of his family was paramount. Brendan needed to be sure he was putting them in the safest vehicle possible. After much deliberation, Katelyn chose a sexy-as-fuck white Mercedes-Benz AMG GLS 63 SUV. With 603 horsepower, it had an engine that rivaled the ’Vette’s. His sweet girl had good taste.

After signing all the paperwork, he shook the salesman’s hand. “Can you deliver it to the house tonight? We’ll be home by dinner.”

“Sure thing, Mr. Murray. I’ll give you a call when we’re on the way.” Then he turned to Katelyn and shook her hand too. “Congrats on your new ride. She sure is pretty.”

On the way out she whispered, “Why do you men refer to cars in pronouns like they’re people?”

“Aren’t they?” he snorted. “C’mon.”

They’d spent three hours at the dealership. It was well past noon, he needed to feed her, and they were already behind schedule. He helped her fold into the passenger seat of the ’Vette. No way was she going to be able to do that in a few months. The Benz was a smart purchase.

“Where to now, butterfly man?”

He grinned at that.

“Does that mean I still give them to you, baby?”

Katelyn leaned across the console and kissed him. “All the time.”

“I thought we’d get some lunch at our favorite spot.”

She cocked her head like she was trying to think of where that could be.

He tsked. “You’ll see.”

They sat at the same table with a view of the lion’s den, chowing down burgers and sharing a big basket of fries. The lion himself was still a no-show. She threw a French fry in the air and he caught it.

“Good catch.”
