I’m so sorry, sweet girl.

The little box was hidden away in his desk drawer. Brendan took it out. He opened the box and gazed at the engagement ring he’d gotten made for her. Diamonds sparkled on velvet of midnight blue. He had it all planned…Valentine’s Day was next week. But that’s the thing about plans, isn’t it?

And dreams.

The dream he once held in his palm was gone now.

He closed the lid and put the box away.

“I love you too much.”

No, this isn’t happening.

Brendan pressed his lips to her forehead. She felt the end in his kiss.

Don’t say it. Please, don’t say it. God, please. I’ll do anything. I didn’t even get the chance to tell you…

“So I’m letting you go.”

…we’re having a baby.

Katie sat there for a minute. Too stunned to even cry. It felt like her heart had seized in her chest, deciding whether or not to take another beat. She wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do.

“I’ll call you a car.”

She looked up at him, into the eyes of the man she loved that were so fucking blue. He was really doing this.

“No.”

She couldn’t think straight. Too many emotions all at once, Katie couldn’t think at all. She shot off the couch and grabbed her things.

“Katelyn.”

She laced up her boots on autopilot.

“Katelyn.”

Katelyn? No.

Her mother called her that when she was in trouble.

But then she was in trouble, wasn’t she?

“It’s Katie.”

And she scrambled to get out of his house.

The house she’d begun to think of as home. Would he come after her? Katie darted through the backyard and out the gate to the alley. She could hear everyone next door at Chloe’s whooping at the TV. Boisterous laughter. She felt sick.

Not here. Please, not here.

With her hand over her mouth, sobbing, Katie hurried down the alley. She just had to make it to the end of the street and slip through the gate into the park. She thought she was behind Sloan’s house, or maybe Kit’s, she wasn’t exactly sure, but she couldn’t stop it. Holding onto the icy trunk of a tree, she clutched her belly and violently retched, emptying the contents of her stomach into the snow.

She felt a hand on her shoulder. Another rubbed her back. They weren’t Brendan’s hands.

“What’s wrong, Katie?”

She began to cry at the sound of Matt’s voice. Katie didn’t want him to see her like this. Heart shredded, sick, a fucking mess. She didn’t want anyone to see her.
