She wasn’t old at all. Just extremely pregnant, and according to the due date they gave her back in November, a week overdue.

“Jesse?”

They were in bed reading. Taylor was at the summer festival with the band. Venery was playing tonight, and just like last year she was going to miss it.

“Yeah, babe?”

“It says here that an orgasm can cause contractions and maybe put me in labor.”

“Yeah?” He kept reading and didn’t look at her.

She tugged on his arm and nodded exuberantly. “And there’s prostaglandins in semen…”

“Babe, what did Doctor Torres say?” He put the iPad beside him on the big bed and raised his eyebrows.

She pouted. “The baby will come when it’s ready, but Jesse, I want it to come now. You helped put it in there, so you need to help me get it out!”

“I never said I wouldn’t help you.” He picked his iPad back up.

“Then why aren’t you? It’s because I’m an Oompa Loompa, isn’t it?”

Jesse rubbed her big round belly like it was a magic lamp he was trying coax a genie out of so he might be granted three wishes.

“You’re not an Oompa Loompa. You’re beautiful.”

“Then why?”

He was trying to keep a straight face, but she could tell he wanted to laugh.

“Because you have to want me for more than just my orgasm-inducing capabilities and my prostawhateveryousaid.” His gaze returned to his iPad.

“Jesse?”

“Yeah, babe?” The corners of his mouth twitched up.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.” He smiled. “C’mere.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing. One more. Please, Jesse!”

Taylor could hear them from downstairs. What were they going on about up there? Timo followed Roman down the stairs and sat at his feet, tails wagging, waiting for a pat. Or maybe they needed to go out.

“Shit. Tay’s home.”

“Good. Maybe he can give you some more prostawhatever. I’m tapped, babe.”

What the bloody hell?

He snapped his fingers. “Let’s go, boys. Outside.”

Taylor was still amped up from their Midsummer Eve show at the festival, yet exhausted at the same time. He loved playing for their home crowd, this is where Venery started after all. Timo followed Roman around the backyard while he kicked a pebble across the brick patio. This house already felt like a home—their home. The baby would be here soon and their lives would never be the same. He was ready for it.

He laughed to himself. His life hadn’t been the same since that day he hid in Dillon’s office, that day he walked into Charley’s and couldn’t take his eyes off a cherry bomb with burnished waves, sea glass eyes, and perfect tits bouncing in a chair. How was it that a year had already gone by?

Timo had his nose in the English rose garden he and Jesse put in for Chloe. The bushes weren’t big yet, but they were already blooming and they would grow. He snapped his fingers. “Here, Timo.” The puppy lumbered right over to him with Roman close behind. He gave them each a pat and they followed him back inside, up the stairs, and into their bedroom.
