He wished he hadn’t.

It’s a girl for Venery’s Taylor Kerrigan!

Chloe looked up at him from her phone. She didn’t say a word. Her lips parted, but nothing came out. She didn’t try to stop the flow of tears that flooded from her gemstone eyes. They rolled silently down her face. Jesse wasn’t sure what to think yet, but he wasn’t going to rush to judgment until he spoke with Taylor. For now, his only concern was for his wife.

“Chloe.”

She wasn’t ready to talk. Jesse knew because the muscles in her face tensed as she shook her head, clenching her jaw. But she didn’t have to speak, she only had to listen. He didn’t know who sent them the link to the TMZ article, it came from one of those proxy numbers that masked who the actual sender was.

The sender was hellbent on making sure they saw it, though—and probably making sure they saw before Taylor had the chance to. He would have called if he knew, and he hadn’t yet, so he didn’t. He’d call him once he settled Chloe. It was obvious to Jesse that whoever sent the messages only wanted to cause trouble for them, and if he ever found out who it was he swore to himself he’d kill them.

“Chloe. Babe, just listen to me, okay?” She blinked, and more tears escaped her eyes, but she looked at him. “This kinda thing happens to them all the time—not just to Tay. C’mon, you’ve heard it before…obsessed groupie claims to be the mother of Kurt Cobain’s secret love child even though he’s been dead for what—like thirty years almost? It’s a hazard of the profession. These girls want attention or money. This is nothing more than tabloid bullshit.”

“You’re not upset?”

He combed his fingers through her tousled hair. “I’m only upset that you’re upset.”

“She filed suit, Jesse.” Her hazel eyes narrowed.

“That’s what TMZ says. We should wait to hear it from Tay.”

She quietly nodded. “And if it’s true?”

“Doesn’t mean it’s his baby.” He pulled her in against him. “C’mon, he’s always been careful. He’d never take the chance of getting some girl pregnant.”

Chloe pulled her head back and gave him the side-eye.

“You’re not some girl. You’re our girl and that’s different. We love you.”

She said it so softly it was almost a whisper. “What if it is his baby?”

“I don’t see how it could be.”

“But what if it is?” She tugged on his arm.

He put his arm around her. “We’ll help him figure it out.”

Her tears started anew and she shook her head. “No.”

“What do you mean, no?”

“I can’t do it, Jesse.” She was sobbing now. “I just fucking can’t. I can’t watch him love a baby he made with somebody else. He’s supposed to love only us and our babies—he promised!”

Jesse pulled her into his lap. She straddled him and he rocked her in his arms. “Babe.”

“You don’t get it, Jess.” She hiccupped. “He’d want to do right by her.”

“Of course he would.”

“It wouldn’t be just his child in our lives. If he even stayed with us, that is.” She laid her head on his shoulder.

“Tay loves us, Riosin,” he soothed. “He wouldn’t ever think of leaving us.”

“You don’t know that, Jess.”

He stroked her hair down her back. “Yes, I do.”

“A baby changes everything.”
