I thought I dreamed what happened last night. That maybe I fell asleep in my car and dreamed about Merc. When I woke up in this strange room, I realized that wasn’t the case. My bags were on and near the rocking chair to the left of the bed, which told me he’d gone to my car. Had he been able to drive it down?

Getting out of bed, I looked out of the window and gasped. I’d never seen so much snow in my life. It had to be about twenty inches. Looking around the room, I walked over to the fireplace. Just those brief seconds by the window had sent a chill through me. Once I was warm, I grabbed the things I needed to shower and went into the bathroom, grateful I’d put the bags with my necessities in my car instead of sending them to my parents’ home.

After my shower, I familiarized myself with the cabin. Its design was standard for a cabin—wood everything with burgundy and green accents. I loved that each room had a fireplace, and Merc had them all blasting, thankfully. It didn’t surprise me to find him in the kitchen fixing breakfast. He was shirtless in loose fitting pajama bottoms and house shoes, looking like my favorite piece of chocolate candy.

“Good morning,” I greeted, getting comfortable at the island in the center of the kitchen.

“Mornin’. How’d you sleep?”

“All things considered… great.”

I figured that had to do with him, but I wouldn’t admit to that.

“Thank you for going and getting my things out of the car. Were you able to drive it here?”

“Nah, it’s snowed in. I was only able to get through the back door, but I could barely get through that because it was snowing so bad. I went three hours ago, and another five inches of snow have come down since then.”

“Damn. Well, it looks like we’ll be stuck here for a while.”

“Looks that way.”

If I was crazy, I’d say there was a smile on his face. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

“Nah, I got it. Thankfully, I stocked the kitchen when I arrived, so we’ll be good while we’re here.”

“Good.”

I decided to check in with my people to let them know I was good. Even though he said he didn’t need me to do anything, I wanted to keep busy. When I got home, I didn’t know what the hell I was going to do. Even if I reopened my store, I wouldn’t have that much inventory because Steven’s bitch ass had destroyed so much of my shit. I didn’t even want to think about it because it would make me mad all over again. His little stunt at the store explained why they had those cocky expressions when they came back to the house last night.

While he finished up breakfast, I made us some mimosas. We ate breakfast together before playing Chess. He wanted to see how much I’d learned from Rey. I lost, but I did a hell of a lot better than I thought I would. After that, we worked out and decided to chill in bed since we were snowed in.

“Everything okay with Marz?” I asked as he searched for something to watch on Hulu.

“He’s good. It’s his damn mama that’s driving me crazy.”

“You want to elaborate on that?”

He released a sigh and put the TV on Living Single, though neither of us paid it any attention as he talked. By the time he was done telling me about the situation, I was speechless. I could understand why he didn’t want them to take Marz and hoped he’d be able to figure something out. After expressing that, I told him if there was anything I could do to help, even if that was just by taking his mind off things, to let me know. Here I was sad over what Steven had done, and Merc was worrying about losing his son.

Silence found us, and I figured it was because he was trapped in his thoughts like we were trapped in this cabin. Well, like I was trapped in this cabin. This was exactly where he wanted to be.

“You okay?” I asked, taking his hand into mine.

Merc gave me a sad smile. “I will be.”

“I’m really sorry you’re going through this.”

“I’m not giving him up without a fight. I’m not sure why she’s even taking it here as if she doesn’t know what I’m capable of. She’s out her fucking mind if she thinks I’m going to let her take him from me.”

“I don’t know her, but I don’t think it will come to that. Something in my gut is telling me God is gonna turn this situation around for all of you. Just trust Him, and for once, let Him work on your behalf.” He looked away, and I gently pulled his attention back to me with my hand under his chin. “You’re always there for everyone else. Let Him be here for you.”

I wasn’t sure which one of us moved first, but our lips connected for a deep, slow, nasty kiss. This man had the ability to unnerve me—effortlessly. His hand wrapped around my neck, and I whimpered as he gripped it while looking into my eyes. Merc released a low, cocky chuckle with a shake of his head.

“You ain’t ready,” he decided, releasing me.

“Yes, I am,” I appealed, lowering myself further into the bed.

Spreading my legs, I allowed his shirt to slide down my thighs and puddle at my waist.
