Chapter Eight

HARLEY

September 16th

Harley Quinn,

Your letters get me through the day. I reread the old ones more times than I care to admit.

I did hear about the world shut down and the toilet paper shortage. Glad I missed out on that chaos. Yes, I do remember Vine, but I don’t remember it ever being super popular.

I am not old, little bird. I am only twenty-six. I know what Twitter is and Facebook. Do you?

Is it a stomach bug? How are you now? I worry about you. I wish I could call you. I only ever talk to my attorney, and he’s a boring old guy. But he’s a good man who’s been helping me pro bono.

I don’t think your skeletons could ever be too much for me. Remember, I’m the one in prison.

I don’t care what you look like. I know your heart is pure, which is all that matters to me. You’re kind enough to take time out of your day to talk to me—some random creep in prison. You could be uglier than the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and I wouldn’t care.

I don’t trust anyone, but for some reason, I trust you.

You’re my little bird because you are my freedom.

I’ve never had the opportunity to be that man. In college, I was too busy working to date, and I didn’t want to involve anyone in my lifestyle choices. I’d like to think I would be the right man. I guess you’ll be the judge of that by the end of our year.

Yes, little bird. I do know what an emoji is. How old did you think I was? Prehistoric?

Oh, and by the way, I have a thing for nerds, especially the kind that know how to ride bikes and eat steak. You’re giving me a hard-on, Harley.

Are you blushing now?

I fight the same darkness. Remember, every day is a battle we must overcome. You aren’t alone. When it seems to be too much, just think of me. Know if I could, I’d be there to help you through and show you the light.
