“Ahhh, the Kim K girl?”

I laugh. “So you do know who she is?”

She blushes. “Uh, not exactly. When I was researching you, I saw a few photos of you together from last year.”

“Wait, was this before or after you gave me your number?”

“After. I wouldn’t have approached you like that had I known who you were, you know that.” She takes a sip of her martini. “So, why didn’t it work out with you and Venus?”

“She wanted the fairy tale. I didn’t.”

“Have you ever wanted it?”

I don’t hesitate with my response. “No.”

“Why not?”

I shrug. “Never been a priority for me I guess, and never met anyone who made me want to change my mind.”

She nods and sips her drink again.

“What about you? We’ve established you don’t enjoy online dating. Any luck just meeting someone out and about?”

She groans and her head falls back a little. “No. I think I’ve officially sworn off online dating for now. I’d rather just take my chances with meeting someone naturally.”

“I understand that, but what I don’t understand is how it hasn’t worked for you.” She has a confused look on her face and I choose my words carefully. “I just mean as beautiful as you are and you’re very warm and kind, charming”—she lifts a brow at me—“sexy as fuck.” I know I’m venturing into dangerous territory, but I’m on my third whiskey of the night and throwing caution to the wind like it’s nothing.

“Go on.” That sexy grin of hers creeps into place as she swirls her skewer of olives around in her glass.

“I just mean I don’t get how you haven’t managed to find a man yet. Apart from your looks, you’re incredibly engaging and likable.”

She sighs. “Thank you but if I had to guess, I’m probably attracting the wrong types of guys, but I don’t know why or how. I try to be nice and I’m not looking for just a hookup. I’m guessing that’s a big part of the problem. That being said, maybe I should just go for a hookup or two before my virginity grows back.”

I laugh and her eyes shoot from her drink to me. “Sorry, I know, boundaries.”

“No, we’re off the clock, we’re friends, we can talk,” I say against my better judgment and then, because I’m a glutton for punishment, I take it a step further. “How long has it been?”

Her laugh comes out in a huff as her eyes drop back to her glass.

“Two years,” she says hurriedly before bringing the glass to her lips and finishing the martini.

“Fuck,” I say without thinking. “Sorry.”

She swallows and motions for the bartender to bring her another.

“No, fuck is absolutely right.” She laughs. “What about you?”

“I’ll take another too,” I say to the bartender, holding up my empty glass.

Why am I having this conversation with her?

“About two months or so.”

“Oh, wow.” Her eyebrows shoot upward.

“Wow, what?”

“Just figured you were a weekly kind of guy.” She smiles as her eyes nervously dart anywhere but mine.
