“Yeah. I liked that too,” Cole agreed, apparently not picking up on Skylar’s testiness.

“So I think I’ll stick to my school, and you can stay at yours.”

The one person neither mentioned was Aiden, which just made Charli think her assumption was correct that something had happened between Aiden and Skylar.

They were joined by their other two brothers, Lee and Zane, who greeted her and Skylar with hugs.

“Hey, Lee. Did I hear right?” Cole began as he thumped Lee on the shoulder. “You’re thinking of coming back to Serenity?”

“It’s possible,” Lee said. “Dr. Jensen asked me to stop by to see him yesterday. He said that he’s thinking of retiring.”

“Wow. I didn’t think you wanted to move back here,” Skylar said.

“It’s not that I didn’t want to, but more that I wasn’t sure that I could have a career here. Now it sounds like maybe I can.”

“So it’s not a for sure thing yet?” Charli asked.

“No. Not yet. But we’ve opened communication about the possibility of me working at the vet clinic.”

Charli knew that her parents would be thrilled if Lee moved back, so for their sake, she hoped it worked out. For all of them who lived there, really. It would be good to have more family close by.

“Will you be moving back next, Zane?” Cole asked.

“Nope. Nope. Nope.” Zane shook his head. “I’m happy where I am. I’ve even started dating someone, so I’m not interested in uprooting my life.”

“There’s the limo,” Skylar said, gesturing to the large glass windows by the doors.

“They took their time,” Charli commented.

“Probably,” Skylar agreed. “But you also didn’t take your time.”

Charli rolled her eyes at her sister. “I didn’t speed or run any red lights.”

Lee chuckled as he headed for the doors. “Come help me, Cole.”

The two of them pushed the doors open and stepped outside to hold them as the wedding party made their way inside. Their parents led the way with Kayleigh and headed down the hallway to the room that had been set aside for the bridal party.

Layla waved as she went by, her face beaming with happiness.

Once Kayleigh and the others had come inside, the limo pulled away. Soon, other cars began to pull into the parking lot.

“I’m going to go check on Layla,” Charli said.

Skylar fell into step with her as they made their way to the room. Neither of them spoke as they walked. Skylar appeared as lost in her thoughts as Charli was in hers.

Once she was sure that Layla was doing okay, they left the room. Layla had been very adamant that Charli didn’t need to wait at the back with her, so Charli planned to go into the sanctuary to find a seat with Skylar.

More people had begun to arrive, among them, Blake and Amelia. Her gaze followed them as they walked into the coatroom, only to reappear a couple of minutes later.

Blake wore black pleated slacks and a cream long-sleeve shirt with a green paisley tie. Amelia wore a dark green dress similar in color to Charli’s, which also complemented her dad’s tie. Charli figured that Jackson’s mom had helped choose their outfits.

When Amelia spotted Charli, she smiled and waved. Charli smiled back, not surprised when the pair headed in their direction.

“Hi, Charli,” Blake said, his gaze warm as he smiled at her. “Exciting day.”

“For Kayleigh and Hudson, for sure.”

“And Layla,” Skylar added.
