“Can’t this wait until Monday?” Ryan cleared his throat, his arm around my shoulder.

“No, Ryan. It can’t. We are all sitting here. The kids are busy. When else will we get this opportunity? Now isn’t the time to stick our heads in the sand. It isn’t going away,” Celine countered, sitting forward, her whole body alert.

“Come now. No fighting please. I’ve already told you both that we will be selling the company to the highest buyer,” Rick insisted, his gaze on the kids in the pool.

“Why can’t we try and save our legacy, Dad?” Celine’s voice shook with emotion. “We have some money saved up. We’ll sell our lake house and the cars.”

“It’s not enough, and I’m tired of fighting for this company. I have fought to keep the doors open for almost 35 years. I want to relax and enjoy the rest of my life doing what I love.”

So, he just got to give up while his son and daughter still fought – while his grandchildren still had to grow up? Because he was old enough to retire now, he was selfishly making the decision for all of us to suffer while he continued living comfortably?

“We thought this was what you loved!” Celine stood, her body shaking. Ace put a hand on her back, and she sank back to the couch, going still. “This is not just your legacy but ours, too. You can’t just give up on us.”

“I’ve already decided, Celine. There is nothing else to discuss on the matter. Your mother and I have decided to sell our house back home, and we will be moving here permanently.”

“What?” Ryan’s body went tense beside mine. “When did you decide this?”

“Last night. We are going to sell everything we can and live off of it. I’m sorry to do this to you both and your families, but you are young. You can find work.”

No!

“We can just find work?” Ryan sputtered out. “That means I have to leave my family, Dad!”

“There are other options, son. That is your choice.”

I felt my whole world spiraling. This wasn’t happening.
