“How lucky we are,” Norman said roughly. “We have both of you. Which means we don’t have to play this bullshit truce with those bloodsuckers.”

He let out a frustrated grunt at my thrashing before backhanding me across the face. Pain exploded over my cheek and my mouth when my lip split open. A warm trickle of blood ran down my chin as Norman fisted my hair and yanked, making me cry out.

He climbed to his feet, dragging me up with him. Then he looked to the right and muttered a curse. Following his gaze, I spotted Amaros coming after us. Fuck, he was fast. And Norman knew that too. He looked back at me, indecision in his eyes. He knew as well as I did that Amaros would kill him in a heartbeat.

“I’ll see you again,” he said under his breath before shoving me to the ground and racing away.

I scrambled to my feet, not getting more than a step before a hand wrapped tightly around my arm.

“No,” I shrieked as I was swung around.

Amaros’s eyes blazed in triumph until they drifted down my face. Disbelief filled his gaze before a smug smile tipped up his lips. He brushed his fingers over my chin before I could jerk away.

“You can choose to be the light or the dark. One cannot survive without the other,” he murmured, speaking the haunting words that I’d read to myself over and over while growing up. The ones I always imagined in my mother’s voice. “Which will you be, Kali? The light or the dark? I guess we’ll find out.”

He broke the stare, glancing down. I followed his gaze, and what I saw had my heart freezing in my chest.

Smeared on his fingers was blood.

My blood.

And it wasn’t red.

It was pitch black.

The color of all the souls surrounding me.

To be continued…
